The Famagusta District

The Karpaz peninsular is one of the most stunnning drives left in the world to-day. It is true natural beauty at its best. Most of this coastline is protected and you will see wild donkey's deserted beaches, be captivated by the desert-like sound of silence, watch turtles nest and hatch on Golden Beach.

No traffic congestion - you will be able to count and remember the amount of vehicles you will encounter on this magical journey. Stop off anywhere, have a picnic and sit amongst the flora and fauna and take in the wonderful air and enjoy the tranquility that surrounds you.

The village of Dipkarpaz is the only place in North Cyprus where Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot live side by side. This side of the island has the most stunning beaches - still near deserted. The best being Golden Beach - you will go off road to reach it. This is where the turtles nest and hatch - little wonder - it is a gem. It has a lovely restaurant that sits high up overlooking the bay and also has a few simple log cabins to rent. What a place to watch sunrise/sunset.

At the end of the journey lies St Andreas Monastery. This has been preserved and pilgrims come from all over the world to take of its healing waters. The journey from our villa in Buyukkonuk is around an hour and a half to the end of the Karpaz, but of course with stops, which believe you me will be frequent, because of its breathtaking beauty - give yourself a day, or as we often do - stay overnight and absorb the atmosphere. We have done this journey several times over the past 4 years and still gasp at its beauty and serenity as we did the first time. make time to do this journey during your stay - you will thank us for it.

Karpaz / Buyukkonuk area

Buyukkonuk is a tranquil village, set on the little known Karpaz Peninsula of Northern Cyprus. It will quickly weave its charm on you, as you become accustomed to the gentle way of life which hasn't changed over centuries. Olives are still pressed in the village mill. Bread is baked in the outside ovens. Walk or cycle the little roads that radiate out from here, through olive trees, some 1000 years old. Carob, eucalyptus, sage, thyme abound.

In spring the countryside is ablaze with wild flowers. Take a picnic, choose an olive tree above the village, sit and relax, and all you will hear are the sounds of the birds. Goats and sheep will amble by, with their shepherdess close to hand. In late Autumn, the olive picking season, whole families can be seen out on their tractors, busy collecting the crop.

This is a simple, rural farming village. Most residents are self sufficient here, keeping chickens, cows, donkeys, goats. Cows are still milked by hand and their milk poured into churns each day. You will be woken in the morning by the cockerels, sometimes the neigh of the donkey and the call to prayer wafting from the local mosque, and sitting on the terrace watching the odd tractors rumbling past on their way to the fields.

Everyone is friendly, and although on a few speak english, all will wave, and want to engage in some kind of conversation, even if it is just hand signals! There is a mixed Turkish and Turkish Cypriot community here, as in all of North Cyprus. There a few grand houses in the village, but many are old, run down, especially in the ancient Turkish quarter. However, they are a proud people, and you will always see the women sweeping inside and outside their homes.

The village has a few tiny shops, enough for essential supples. The real hub of the village is Sultan's Restaurant. They sell anything and everything in the shop cum cafe. Surrounded by shoe boxes, you can drink coffee, dine on a simple tagine, or chicken and chips In summer outside at the back are tables for dining, and also attached to the cafe a large restaurant/venue where there is occasional entertainment. Men gather here at the cafe to talk, as is common in all Middle Eastern countries, but ladies don't be put off, just enter Izet's and you will really be given a warm welcome.

At the centre of the village also is DELCRAFT, run by our friends Lois and Ismail. They are great ambassadors for North Cyprus and have organised day activities for olivepicking, breadmaking, weaving etc., Tourism is in its infancy in North Cyprus, but with a few more bedrooms available in the village, it has become a pilot village for Agro Tourism.

Approximately 20 minutes North and South of the village are wonderful unspoit beaches. To the North the road climbs over the Besparmak Mountains and down to the village of Kaplica with its hilltop Crusader Castle and beach. Just one small restaurant here, on the beach, serving the freshest fish you can taste! The road out of the village to the South, winds its way through to the fishing village of Bogaz, with its selection of small restaurants, harbour and beach. There is a new supermarket here now.

Some 30 mins away will take to the lovely walled town of Famagusta with its maze of shops and history.
So that is our village, Buyukkonuk which translates into Big Welcome. Our little peace of the mediterranean touched by heaven. Time has stood still, but we promise it will de-stress you and you will find it very hard to leave.

How to get there

Numerous airlines fly from UK :

Into Ercan Airport are Turkish Airways and Atlas Jet

Into Larnaca are British Airways, Cyprus Airways and several charter companies from your local airport

Transfer time from Airport to villa is aproximately 75 mins from both airports

Taxi transfers can be arranged and car hire . We advise Sun Rent a Car - www.sunrentacar.com Simply e mail them and they will arrange pick up and car hire for you. Direct your e mail to Enver who is the Manager. We have dealt with this company for over 2 years now and find them to be both professional and reliable. When booking, tell them you are renting our house in Buyukkonuk and you will receive a discount. If travelling from Larnaca you will have to have a taxi to take you across the border. There are two border crossings, one from Nicosia and the other Pyla. We suggest you use the Pyla crossing as you can pick up your car hire closer to the house, approx 30min drive,, and very straightforward. The Nicosia border crossing is much further away from the house and around 1hr 15min drive, also the crossing point is much busier than Pyla. Cost of taxi from Larnaca is approx £40 each way using the Pyla crossing and £25 each way from the Nicosia crossing.

Guestbook for Zeytinlik

A wonderful week in unique surroundings. I am retiring with memories of the lovely Karpas, swimming in clear seas, eating bread straight from the wood fired oven, visiting the village school, cycling the lanes and of course meeting the lovely characters of Buyukkonuk. Even got to love the 5am call to Prayer! Thanks so much for introducing us to your little piece of heaven. P Johnson

Fantastic great design villa, and so in keeping with the countryside around. Eight days of wall to wall sunshine. Revisited Hassans at Golden Beach, worth the trek for overnight stay in his en suite shacks! C Gibson.

Enjoyed our stay in your lovely villa which has been beautifully furnished. Has been a wonderful experience living in a rural village and seeing a traditional way of life so very different from our own. JS and O Dixon.
