About the home

The house is set in a tea estate with spectacular views across to the Knuckles Range. Wildlife, and especially birds, are plentiful around the house and garden and there are excellent local walks or, for the more adventurous, trekking possibilities.

The centre of Kandy, a World Heritage City, is only 40 minutes' drive away and here there are excellent shopping and other urban facilities as well as major cultural and tourist attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth and the famous annual Perahera festival. Other important attractions including Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Pinnawella Elephant Orphanage can easily be done in a day trip.

If you want to experience Sri Lanka away from the hotspots, but still with easy access, Jungle Tide is the place for you.

In addition there are comfortable cane chairs and tables on the verandah, board games, books and binoculars are also available for guest use. A cot is available (free) and extra single folding beds can be provided.

As well as the swimming pool the stream can be used for paddling. There is a large lawn and many tropical fruit trees.

Smoking is not permitted in the house but is fine on the pleasant verandah, which is where most people choose to spend their time.

The Central Province region

Central Province is in Sri Lanka's hill country, famous for its tea estates, mountains and waterfalls. The climate is cooler and less humid than Colombo, the coast or the north, with warm days and pleasant evenings all year round.

Places of interest easily reachable from Jungle Tide include Peenawella Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Cave Temples, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, elephant-back trekking at Habarana and Victoria Golf Course as well as those in or near Kandy itself - see below.

The Kandy area

Kandy is the 'cultural capital' of Sri Lanka and a World Heritage City. The city centre includes theTemple of the Tooth, the holiest place of Buddhist worship in the island. There is also Kandy Lake and a nature reserve close to the centre as well as excellent shopping and other city facilities including cricket test matches.

Just down the road are the splendid Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, a great place to spend a day and have a picnic. Kandy was the last part of Sri Lanka to be taken by the British and its history and culture include spectacular dance and the annual Perahera festival - the world's biggest street parade - in July or August depending on the full moon.

Nearest airport is Bandaranaika International Airport, Colombo, from which it is a four hour drive to the house. We recommend King's Rent-a-Car as a reliable company. It is best to hire vehicle and driver unless used to Sri Lankan driving habits! Tel (+94) 112 875 063 e-mail krcs@sltnet.lk The driver will need to phone ahead for directions on the final part of the journey as the house is situated in a rural part of the hills above Kandy. Further details will be provided on confirmation of booking.

Alternatively Kandy can be reached by inter-city bus or train from the centre of Colombo as well as many other towns in Sri Lanka and a vehicle and driver hired there for the journey up to the house.
