Home description
The cottage has 2 double and 1 twin bedrooms with ample space in the master bedroom for a travel cot. Gorenja Vas is typically Slovenian, friendly and quiet but bustling with the activity of a traditional rural village. In the historic town of Kanal, a 5 minute walk away you will find a choice of grocery shops, a highly recommended pizzeria and a scrumptious ice cream and cake parlour!
During Summer months the beach of the River Soca in the centre of town is a very inviting bathing area and becomes a hub of activity for both locals and visitors. Explore the many footpaths which permeate the surrounding hills and discover neighbouring hill top villages.
The central location of Kanal on the Italian border of Slovenia allows great opportunity for sightseeing and activity. The River Soca is famous amongst white water adrenalin seekers. The mountains of Kanin, Cerkno and the Triglav national park are all within one hours drive providing hiking and skiing opportunities amongst stunning and unspoilt scenery. Nova Gorica, a 20 minute drive South is a modern University city where there are shopping centres to suit all budgets. There are numerous other attractions within 1 to 2 hours driving in any direction from Kanal.

The Goriska region
Slovenia was the Northern part of former Yugoslavia and was first to gain a relatively peaceful independence in 1991. Kanal is in the Soca valley of Goriska only a few kms from the italian border. Between the Wars, Kanal was in fact annexed to Italy.
The Soca Valley formed the Isonzo Front during WW1 and there are many museums and historical sites relating to this period. The charming italian like town of Kanal is surrounded by wooded hills and pretty hill top villages. The crystal clear and stuningly turquoise river Soca is teaming with fish including a unique species of trout.
Half way between the mountains and the Adriatic, this region of Slovenia is where the Alpine and Mediterranean weather systems converge to give Hot Summers and Cold Winters. There is a lot of sunshine all year and plenty of rain but this typically falls in quick and heavy thunder storm. These conditions allow the orchards, gardens and vinyards to flourish and it is easy to see why the region has been nick named "the market garden of Europe!"
In April this year we went skiing at Bovec during the morning and were soaking up the sun on the river beach in the afternoon!
Slovenia is only the size of Wales so most parts of the country are accessable from Kanal for sight seeing. Primorska, the greater region (1 of 8 in Slovenia) makes up the west border of Slovenia and is described as "Europe in miniature". There are mountains, rivers, beaches, forests and flat Karst plains, vinyards and ancient towns and villages
Kanal / Gorenja Vas area
Within walking distance there are numerous foot paths in the surrounding hills, fishing and swimming (season depending!) in the River, and train trips from the local train station which allow a relaxed day out away from the steering wheel! There is an excellent Pizzeria and Ice-cream parlour in the town and also a basic hotel where you can eat a good traditional meal at exceptional value.
Explore further a field by car, possibly via the auto-train which is the quickest way into the Triglav National park, Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. (And is a real experience in itself!) This is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Alternatively visit the famous underground caves of Postojna and Skocjan, both about 80 km from Kanal. Near Postojna there is also the Lipizzaner Stud farm , the home of the "dancing white horses" of the Vienna riding school.
Goriska Brda, the centre of which is 15km from Kanal is one of the country's prime wine areas and the rolling hills are covered in vines and orchard fruits. There are many vineyards and tourist farms where you can sample the local fair.
From the mountain resorts of Bovec and Cerkno you can ski, hike, paraglide and participate in white water sports. If you feel like a swim in the sea then the coast of the Adriatic can be reached in 1hr and Piran a traditional and picturesque fishing town is 110km from Kanal. Ljubljana the vibrant capital is only a 2 hours drive (115km)
The various tourist information offices in the region all offer detailed historical and scenic walks and ambles particularly around the Kobarid area where there is an excellent WW1 museum about the Isonzo Front.
There are many annual festivals in the area. Details of what is on can be found at theTIC (Tourist information) in the centre of Kanal.
Highlights include: World Cup Bridge Diving, August. The diving platform is built 8 meters above the 10 meter bridge of Kanal! Chestnut festival, Lig, October (hill top village, 9km away.) Cherry festival in Goriska Brda, May ( Orchard and Wine region, 15km away) Various music and poetry festivals in the old square, Kanal (Kontrada)
