The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Kalkan is within the Lycian region which boasts The Lycian Way. This is a long-distance footpath around part of the coast of ancient Lycia. The Sunday Times has listed it as one of the world's top ten walks.
The back drop of the Taurus Mountains adds to the spectacular views across the Mediterranean sea. The scenery is breath taking.
Despite the changes that Tourism has brought to Kalkan, a traditional life still continues here. Many local people spend summers in the surrounding villages up in the mountains where it is cool then return to the coast in the winter months. The majority of the locals have embraced the tourism and enjoy the life in the summer months working in their shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. They are extremely friendly and welcoming people and this is reflected in the success of their town.
Kalkan Town has over 200 restaurants and bars yet still has an air of sophistication. The cobbled streets hold a variety of wonderful shops selling authentic ceramics, beautiful Turkish hand woven rugs, leather goods such as handbags, purses, belts. There are affordable boutiques and shops selling Turkish delight or hand carved Meerschaum pipes the list is endless.
The harbour has boat trips daily and you can book either a private charter or go on a larger Gullet. You are taken out for the day and stop in little bays for swimming and snorkelling, you are then served lunch and before you go back you are served with tea and cakes. It
is a very relaxing day and well worth a try.
For those who are more energetic, the beach clubs in the bay offer a variety of water sports including jet skiing, water-skiing or scuba diving.
You would never run out of things to do in Kalkan and the surrounding area, it is a great place to spend a holiday without the hustle and bustle of a big resort.
