Home description

Nemo is one of 15 luxury apartments on the Saneil complex. Built to a very high specification in 2004, in a stunning location overlooking both Kalkan and Kalamar bays, the apartments are set in landscaped gardens and share a fabulous 25m teardrop pool. Nemo has been comfortably and tastefully furnished. The front patio overlooking the pool offers welcome shade throughout much of the day in high season. Nearest shop 5 minute walk. 10 - 15 minute walk into Kalkan village centre and harbour.

The historic village of Kalkan nestles at the foot of the dramatic Taurus Mountains in a beautiful bay. It has unrivalled charm and character. The heart of Kalkan is its Old Town, a maze of small cobbled streets that wind down to the harbour. The beauty of the village, the weather and the friendliness of the local people draw visitors back time and time again.

Two of our daughters (aged 18 and 17) said they would come on holiday with us if we went somewhere different. We chose Turkey. What a wonderful decision! We fell in love with Kalkan and the apartment. The Turkish people are so friendly and the atmosphere just wonderful. We ate out at a different restaurant every night and were impressed by the wonderful quality of the food. We loved the beaches and the beach clubs and spent many happy hours taking on the locals at backgammon! Hilary, Lydia and Emma loved exploring the shops and John soon felt like a local at one of Kalkan's friendly bars! The Saneil complex is absolutely stunning. We felt so at home there that when the chance to buy Nemo came up we did not hesitate.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Temperatures peak in Kalkan from the beginning of July to mid-August. However, the "Meltern" wind brings a welcome breeze to the scorching summer afternoons! Kalkan enjoys day time temperatures in the 20s as early as March and as late as November. From November to April, the weather is less predictable, but the cooler temperatures are often accompanied by sun, making it an ideal time to explore the area. The sea temperature sea rarely drops below 16C.
Kalkan is situated on the Lycian Way, making it an ideal base for trekking holidays. The way of life in many of the villages around Kalkan has remained untouched for centuries. There are many historical sites in the area, including the ancient city of Xanthos and the sunken city of Kekova. The dramatic Saklikent Gorge and beautiful Patara Beach are within easy reach.

Kalkan area

The heart of Kalkan is its old town, a maze of narrow, cobbled streets that lead down to the harbour - home to the elegant Turkish "gulets" that can be hired for lazy days out at sea. The streets are lined with whitewashed, shuttered buildings covered in bourgainvillea and intermingled with a wonderful array of shops (that stay open until midnight!) and a multitude of excellent roof-top and harbour-side restaurants offering a variety of top-quality freshly cooked food.

Kalkan has a small pebble beach with sunbeds and parasols, but is better known for its beach clubs - private rock bathing platforms dotted around the bay, with sunbeds, parasols and a cafe/restaurant . They provide a peaceful haven in which to relax by the water's edge and offer direct access to the sea and a variety of water sports, including water-skiing and scuba diving.

5 minutes drive to sandy Kaputas Beach, dramatically situated at the foot of a ravine.

20 minutes drive to world-famous Patara Beach, home to protected turtles. Patara offers 20km of white sand backed by sand dunes, mimosa and the ancient ruins of Patara, birthplace of St. Nicholas. It is regularly featured as one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful and undiscovered beaches.

Other ancient ruins within easy reach of Kalkan are Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara and the sunken city of Kekova.

The way of life in Bezirgan, 17km inland from Kalkan and 800m above sea level, has been untouched for centuries. Oxen still plough the rougher terrain and homemade flat bread is cooked on open fires. Islamlar, another village of extreme beauty high in the mountains above Kalkan, is famous for its trout farms and restaurants.

There is a fabulous weekly market at Kalkan that offers a wonderful variety of goods, ranging from Turkish rugs, wooden backgammon boards, good-quality leather and cotton goods to spices, cheese and Turkish Delight - haggling compulsory!

The spectacular 18km long Saklikent Gorge offers an experience not to be missed. Wade into the refreshingly cold snow-melt of the Xanthos River and see how far you can get. Hopefully you will be "adopted" by a guide, who will help haul you up and over the rocks and waterfalls along the way! Relax afterwards at one of the restaurants suspended on wooden platforms above the water, where you can eat freshly-caught trout and a range of traditional Turkish dishes.

Jeep safaris and canoeing are some of the activities also on offer on the Xanthos river.

Take to the waters of the Dalaman River for white-water rafting.

Other activities available in the area are sailing, paragliding, horse-riding, sea kayaking and jet-skiing. Walking and trekking can also be enjoyed around Kalkan, which is situated on the Lycian Way (a 509km walk around the coast and mountains of Lycia, starting at Fethiye and finishing near Antalya).
