The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Modern Turkey which has historical sights to match Europe's finest resorts, is divided into seven regions, of which Kalkan falls under the Mediterranean Region also known as the Turquoise Coast, an area of exceptional maritime beauty with numerous picturesque beaches and coves. With only 2 winter months (January and February) Kalkan offers sunshine for 10 months a year. Hottest months are May-October, peaking mid-July to mid-August. Part of the Lycian coast there are historic sights to visit (Xanthos, Pinara, Patara, Thios and Myra), boat trips to the sunken city of Kekova or simply just relax in the sun.
For beach lovers then this is the place for you - Kalkan has a small beach but only 20 minutes away by local bus (Dolmus) you can relax on 17km of the most beautiful beach you will ever see - Patara Beach - where turtles return to lay their eggs. You will find beach bar/restaurant, and loungers available for hire. There is a small charge of 80 Turkish lire (approx.30p) per person to visit this area as there is also a historic site close by. This beach is a must!
Kalkan area
Once a thriving fishing village Kalkan is now a beautiful, picturesque resort nestling at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. Narrow streets twist down to the ancient harbour and beach through the historic town and are lined with whitewashed villas with shuttered windows. Overhead hang original ornately carved Ottoman timber balconies garlanded with brilliantly coloured bougainvillea cascading to the streets below. Everywhere you turn you will find shops, bars and restaurants - Kalkan is renowned for its good food, roof terrace restaurants and bars - the highest number of restaurants and bars per inhabitant on the Turkish coast! For the water sports enthusiast look no further than Kalkan Beach Clubs for diving, scuba diving or canoeing. If you have never done it before then there are reasonably priced courses to teach you how. Kalkan comes alive at night bustling with activity and if you have spent the day basking in the sun then you can catch up on your shopping as closing time is midnight! Kalkan has something for everyone even an internet cafe.

How to get there
Fly to Dalaman Airport from April-November. Limited flights to Dalaman from November onwards - Onur Air (see below). There are flights to Antalya all year round. Charter Airlines: Thomas Cook, First Choice, Airtours, Thomson, Avro, Air Tours. Onur Air fly to Dalaman from Gatwick and Manchester all year round - good airline and reasonable cost. Journey time from Dalaman Airport to Kalkan 1.5 hours using newly constructed tunnel. Roads are excellent. Journey time from Antalya Airport to Kalkan 2.5-3 hours. Hire Car or Arrange for pick up by Kalkan Tour Operators (best option and easy to arrange - we can assist you in this regard)
