Kalkan is an ideal base from which to explore the aptly named Turquoise coast with its many white sandy beaches, lush green wooded landscapes, towering mountains, spectacular gorges and wide range of protected wildlife. The area is a historical treasure trove, rich in archaological finds, set in lovely countryside teeming with wildlife.20 minutes drive up the coastal road in either direction will take you past rock tombs to the stunning byzantine remains of Myra, and a fascinating range of amphitheatres, roman baths, temples and arches which were once the ancient sea port of Patara.Look out for the friendly skylarks and lizards and a rain forest like array of wildlife on the trip through the ruins to the 18 kilometre sandy beach, where loggerhead turtles are protected. There are boat trips to nearby bays and islands, bustling ports and market towns with colourful fresh produce and craft markets to explore. The area has a temperate climate all year round , reflected in the warmth of the welcome from the locals.
