The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The town of Kalkan is situated on the SW of the Mediterranean and nestles at the foot of the Toros Mountains resulting in scenery of the most spectacular kind.
Kalkan and its environs provides an ideal location for the most perfect holiday it combines a great base to explore the surrounding area with excellent activites and ameneties on offer in the town itself (please see details below if you don't want to venture too far ). There is certainly something for everyone.
This area of Turkey not unlike the rest of the country has great variety ; be it in the geography, people or climate.
Take a short trip up into the mountains and you will stumble across the truly traditional village of Bezirgan, which, against the back drop of mountain peaks can be found on a flat plain where the people still live off the land. It is a humbling experience and a step back in time - well worth a visit . Another mountain village within 15 minutes of Kalkan is Islamlar, with an abundance of river trout . Most People suggest that lunch time is the best time ; when the freshest of trout can be enjoyed whilst taking in the stunning views over Kalkan. Compare these mountain villages to the hustle and bustle of modern day Antalya, the main city of the area, and it is hard to believe that the two are only just three hours by car from each other.
To say that the area is rich in history is a huge understatement. The region is sitting on the ground of ancient Lycia and there is evidence of this everywhere. A whole host of ancient Lycian sites can be reached within the hour from Kalkan, namely : Patara, Xanthos, Pinara, Tlos, and Letoon. A little over an hour away are Myra and Kekova, whilst a little further afield ,but still easily accessble from Kalkan are Olympos and Phasselis. The most famous of the ancient sites Ephesus is also an option from Kalkan but we would suggest a very early start or an overnight stay.
Natural beauties are of course not to be missed, with both Saklikent Gorge and Patara Beach stretching a magnificent 18kms. Patara beach is a short 20 min drive from Kalkan with the Gorge being a little further at about an hour. Patara beach whilst being voted one of the best beaches in the world is also a nesting site for the endangered Caretta Turtles. A wonderful way to enjoy Patara Beach is on horseback among the sand dunes and by the seas edge. Organised trips are available and a must for horse riders.
Finally It would be crazy of us not to mention the main appeal for most in and around the Kalkan area and that is of course the beautiful turquoise waters of the mediterranean sea. Whether enjoying it from the comfort of a sun lounger with no more than a good book for company or in a more active nature pursuing one of the many watersports on offer - it is beautiful.
Kalkan and the surrounding area is truely a place that can be made as active or as relaxing as possible
Kalkan / Kisla area
The town of Kalkan, with its hot summer days and turquoise blue sea epitimises everything that a traditional fishing Village could possibly be with the added extra of a certain ambience and magical charm.
Kalkan itself is a small maze of cobbled streets winding their way down to the port where small fishing boats bob gently side by side with luxury Yachts. Traditional Turkish/Greek houses decked with bougainvillia cascading from the balconies help create a very picturesque place and the mix of city Turks that have settled in Kalkan amidst the local people create a most unique atmosphere.
By day Kalkan has a most lazy feel. The ever welcoming Kalkan people always have time for a chat be they shop keepers sipping their Çay, taxi and Dolmuş drivers, restaurateurs or even the local school children.
For the holiday maker its all about relaxing by the pool or heading off to one of the many sights and activities the area has to offer, and of course enjoying the beautiful waters of Kalkan bay. Many options for enjoying it abound, from one of the many beach clubs of Kalkan Bay to the town beach. For the more active a whole wealth of watersports are on offer . Blue Marlin watersports in the harbour is a watersports heaven with waterskiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, dinghy sailing, banana and ringo rides and speed boat trips all on offer. However, the bay is best appreciated by boat, either by renting a small boat or chartering a gulet for the day.
By night Kalkan comes into her own and transforms into a hub -bub of relaxing sophistication. A choice of many restaurants with superb dining are a major attraction and great pleasure. Lots of welcoming restaurants are waiting to serve you a whole range of Turkish and International cuisine. Later in the evening a stroll around the cobbled streets leading down to the harbour to browse in the boutiques or have a nightcap in one of the bars is a delightful way to end the day.
