The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Situated along the Mediterranean Coast, also known as the Turquoise or Lycian Coast, Kalkan is frequently referred to as the Turkish Riviera. Surrounded by the Tauras Mountains, Kalkan combines the stunning sea views with an equally stunning mountains as a rugged backdrop. 30 mins East is the small town of Kas, or 1 hour West is the larger town of Fethiye. The whole coastline is dramatic due to the mountains and sea.
Kalkan is renown for its high quality, many restaurants, which makes it a more upmarket Turkish restort appealing to mainly couples and families. With over 300 days a year of sunshine and a 6 months tourist season, you are more or less guaranteed to go back home with a tan! A small resort with charm and character, Kalkan has a small pebble beach and various beach clubs (sunbeds, restaurants and direct access to the warm sea) dotted around the bay if you prefer something more intimate. If you prefer sand between your toes, then head for Patara Beach which is a 10-15 minute drive away and is 17 kms of sandy beach. If you prefer something a bit more cultural, the area is steeped in history. The Lycian Way runs through the area, Xanthos (a once Roman town) is not far away, visit the 3rd largest gorge in Europe which is Saklikent Gorge, or see the first ever democratic parliament building at Patara which was once the Capital of the region and a very important harbor town. These are just a few of the various things to see and do in the near vicinity.
