The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The bouganvillea covered harbour town is set in the heart of the old Lycian region of Turkey. Turkey's longest white sandy beach at the ancient site of Patara is just 25 mins away. Nearer to hand is the stunning Kaputas ravine beach - 10 minutes by taxi or local bus. The ancient sites of Xanthos, Letoon and Tlos are all close by and can be reached by car or dolmus (local bus). The pretty harbour town of Kas is well worth a visit (25 minutes by car). Kas offers attractions for culture vultures - ancient rocktombs and an amphitheatre - shoppers (wonderful jewellery and carpets) and thrill seekers - watersports and diving - alike. A little further afield but still easily accessible for a short day trip is the sunken city of Kekova, the gorge at Saklikent, Myra (home to the original St Nicholas) and Dalyan with its abundant and protected wildlife. The bustling market town of Fethiye is well worth a visit on market day (1hr and 20 mins by car). Once there it would be a shame to miss the famous protected beach at Olu Deniz and the ghost town at Kaya. One thing's for sure - you won't be short of things to do and places to visit.
Kalkan area
Kalkan is known as the jewel of the Turkish mediterranean coastline. It's unique blend of ancient authenticity (there are strict laws controlling the development of the old town), cosmopolitan sophistication, pretty shops and fine dining is unparalled in Turkey. The range and style of restaurants far exceed that generally available and are a highlight of Kalkan life. Kalkan is at her very best at night, and dining under the stars in one of her trademark rooftop restaurants is an experience not be be missed. Winding streets tumble down to the harbour where traditional gullet boats idle on the crystal blue waters. Boat trips leave daily from the harbour and make a perfect lazy day out - lunch is included and the frequent stops along the coast allow plenty of time for swimming and snorkling. The shopping in Kalkan is also best done at night when it is fun to browse the local jewellery, kilims, pottery and glassware. It's unlikely that you'll pick up a bargain but you'll come home with something you actually like!
