The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Ancient Lycia in south western Turkey runs from Ekincik to Antalya in a semi-circle of some of the most mountainous and dramatic landscape anywhere in Turkey. The Taurus Mountains rise to over ten thousand feet and the highest peaks are snow covered right into early summer. It's magnificent scenery with it's lakes, woods and forests, it's stunning coast line and superb ruins of two dozen cities make Lycia a place to explore and enjoy. Lycia's coast line runs for several hundred kilometres, borders the Mediterranean and attracts yachtsmen to the crystal clear waters and near perfect climate. The many islands, coves and beautiful beaches such as Patara, one of the top ten in the world ( Sunday Times 2005) and Kaputus, within 15 minutes of Kalkan and Olu Deniz, 45 minutes away, add to Lycia 's unique historic and scenic appeal to visitors. At a latitude of 36 degrees, Kalkan is one of the most southerly points of Turkey's Mediterranean coast and enjoys sunny, warm days most of the year. Spring and autumn are popular times to visit with temperatures into the 70's not unusual right through to December.
The UNESCO world heritage site of Xanthos was Lycia's capital city for much of it's history and the ruins of the principal cities of Tlos, Myra, Pinara and Partara, all close to Kalkan attract visitors from all over the world to look at the ancient ruins dating back over 2000 years. The British museum also has an extensive collection of Lycian artefacts.
Kalkan / Central Kalkan area
Villa Ottoman Garden is located in the historic harbour town of Kalkan, an enchanting place in one of the most beautiful locations on Turkey's gorgeous Mediterranean coast. Kalkan bay will take your breath away. It's crystal clear Turquoise water, and mountains that rise steeply behind it provide a dramatic and beautiful backdrop in which to enjoy your stay. Kalkan has not been touched by mass tourism, and as a result remains unspoiled, upmarket and very charming, with amazing views at every turn. Strict building codes ensure the towns historic preservation, and the many fine restaurants contribute to the special atmosphere that brings back visitors time and time again. Narrow cobbled streets that wind away from the harbour with bougainvillea covered wooden ottoman balconies and historic architecture are typical of the old town, and the warm Turkish hospitality will stay with you long after your holiday is over. Beach Clubs There are a number of beach clubs around the bay that can be reached by free shuttle service from the harbour. These are wonderful paved platform terraces and gardens with ladders going into the sea. They offer swimming, sunbathing, water sports and restaurant/bar facilities and have sun beds and umbrellas for hire. Water sports Jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides are available from the beach clubs around the bay. Diving Kalkan's crystal clear waters are popular with scuba divers and is a top location for diving along Turkey 's coast. It has several sites including islands and reefs with a huge variety of marine life including turtles, nurse sharks, dolphins and barracudas. Kalkan Dive centre can be contacted on www.kalkandiving.com River Tubing Enjoy floating down the shallow Sakilkent River with your tube and paddle. It's great fun and lasts between 45 minutes and a couple of hours depending on which trip you choose. River tubing can be booked in Kalkan at one of the tour companies or you can join the tour just outside Sakilkent Gorge. River Canoeing Enjoy a day canoeing on the Xanthos River near to Kalkan. Experienced guides take you downstream through some beautiful scenery. A barbecue lunch is served along the way, and there is an opportunity for a revitalising mud bath before the tour finishes at beautiful Patara beach for a swim. Boat Trips Relax on a day trip around the bays and Islands of Kalkan on a traditional Turkish Gullet and visit beautiful Kaputus beach, Snake Island , the blue cave and aquarium bay. Tours leave at 10.00 am from the harbour and return around 5.00pm . There is plenty of time for swimming, and lunch is served on board. A very popular trip is to the ancient sunken city of Simena in the area of Kekova, one of the most beautiful areas of the Lycian coast.A terrible earthquake in the 2nd century AD caused a downward shift of land and the submerged ancient houses can be viewed through glass bottom boats. Boat trips can be booked direct at the harbour or through the tour companies in Kalkan. Sightseeing Within easy reach of Kalkan are the ruins of the ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, its port Patara, religious centre Letoon, and also Pinara. Xanthos was discovered in 1838 by the archaeologist Charles Fellows. Today a mixture of ruins from Roman, Lycian and Byzantine times including the Tomb of the Harpies, theatre, Neried monument and Inscribed pillar can be seen. At the holy Lycian centre of Letoon there are 3 temples dedicated to Leto, Artemis and Apollo, gods of mythology. Patara is very close to Kalkan and famous as being the birth place of St Nicholas who has entered into Christian tradition as Father Christmas, and for having many interesting ruins. It was an important commercial centre and harbour during the 5th century. A day trip to Patara can include beautiful Patara beach, one of the best in Turkey and a perfect place to relax after a bit if sightseeing. There are several beautiful beaches in and around Kalkan. The main beach in Kalkan is just two minutes walk from the villa and next to the harbour and old town. It has crystal clear aquamarine water and white pebbles. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired for around 3 Turkish Lira a day. It's location next to the harbour make it a very popular place for soaking up the atmosphere of the early evening and watching the boats come back to harbour. Kaputus Beach Ten minutes from Kalkan is beautiful Kaputus beach, a sandy cove at the foot of a mountain gorge. The turquoise water is incredible and this beach is used in many travel brochures for Turkey . There are cheap and frequent Dolmuses (shared minibuses) from Kalkan. Patara Beach Patara beach is a completely undeveloped 12km stretch of sandy beach voted one of the best in the world by Times online for 2005.

The cream stone theme continues to the villa's elevations which gives a very warm welcoming appearance. Internal living spaces are light and open. The accommodation in Villa Ottoman Garden is arranged over two floors and incorporates all the practicalities for a supremely comfortable holiday with stylishly decorated living spaces. The overall style is clean lines with accent colours and touches of traditional textiles and artefacts. The following is an overview of the accommodation:
The main entrance door opens into a lovely open-plan living space which affords gorgeous views from the living area to the Mediterranean beyond. Furnishings are understated, combining contemporary oak dining and occasional furniture with hints of rich reds in the soft furnishings. There is ample space here to lounge, eat, watch TV/DVDs,enjoy music, read or play games. One area of this space is dedicated to a large well equipped classic cream painted kitchen with double doors onto the front terracing.
All bedrooms have access to outside areas and are arranged as follows:
The master bedroom is on the first floor and has beautiful open views across the bay both from the room itself and from its own private balcony. This is a comfortable but elegant room with antique style black iron bed, fresh white linen and hints of warm reds and orange and with pine wardrobing. This room has a very generous en suite shower room.
Bedroom 2 has a double bed and benefits from Mediterranean views from Juliet-style double doors. Also furnished with black iron bedstead, this room has hints of turquoise to reflect the pool and the sea. Once again the dressing table, wardrobe and bedside furniture are finished in pine. En suite shower is adjacent.
Bedroom 3 is a twin room and is situated on the first floor. It too has en suite shower facilities and has the additional bonus of a side balcony with pool and terrace views. Again the beds are locally made in ironwork.
Bedroom 4 is a ground floor twin room with immediate access to the pool through a private door. The adjacent shower room conveniently serves this bedroom.
The large downstairs shower room serves as a downstairs cloakroom and shower room for Bedroom 4.
There is a generous first floor landing accessed by an open tread wooden staircase which incorporates a laundry area and access to the first floor bedrooms.
Further details outdoors: The villa is as spacious outside as it is inside. Guests have plenty of choice as to where to spend their time in the sun. Lounging by the pool is a favourite option where you can sunbathe with intermittent dips into the water and then maybe enjoy poolside dining. The terracotta mosaic-tiled terraces are fringed with pretty pink and red oleander and fragrant bay trees. The Ottoman area, from which the villa takes its name, is situated on the other side of the villa away from the pool. This is a luxurious chillout space complete with floor cushions where guests can sit and eat, read or simply enjoy the Mediterranean views beneath the welcome cool shade of a leafy canopy. This is an enjoyable retreat both day and night. The Ottoman area is accessed directly from the living room and has beautiful warm lighting to create the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks.
