The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The pretty town of Kalkan lies on Turkey's Turquoise Coast in the region of Lycia – home to a spectacular coastline, stunning mountain scenery and a wealth of history.
The Taurus mountains provide the backdrop to this coastline, offering hidden villages and a traditional way of life to discover.
Ancient sites within easy reach of Kalkan include the stunning Saklikent Gorge – one of the largest in Europe; Xanthos, once the capital of Lycia which has the ruins of a temple and amphitheatre; Kekova, the ancient sunken city which you can explore by canoe; and Tlos with its fortress dating back to the Ottoman period.
Just a 10/15 minute drive from Kalkan by car or local bus is the incredible beach of Patara, once named by the Sunday Times as one of the world's best beaches. 18km long, this sandy beach offers shallow waters and is perfect for families, while hidden in the sand dunes behind are the ancient ruins of the original port of Patara with one of the first lighthouses, amphitheatre and walkways which are being restored, with the ancient Lycian Parliament restoration officially opened in May 2012.
Another beach that shouldn't be missed is the lovely Kaputas at the mouth of a spectacular gorge. Reached by steps down the cliff side, the water here is wonderful and it is one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey.
Activities in this area are extensive, from some of the best diving in the Mediterranean, to water skiing, white water rafting, horse riding, hill walking, and even paragliding. Alternatively, simply relax and enjoy the weather - the hottest months are July and August, with the season really running from May until the end of October, but March, April and November can all be lovely.
The Kalkan Area
If you have ever been to Kalkan you will know how special this town is. About 1.5 hours from Dalaman airport, Kalkan sits nestled around a beautiful bay with its old town home to narrow streets and traditional whitewashed shops and houses with painted balconies looking out to sea or down into the bougainvillea strewn streets.
Kalkan's pretty harbour is truly charming, with fishing boats and gulets lined up ready for the day – don't miss a gulet trip around the bay to discover some of the hidden coves. Around the harbour are some of the town's most renowned restaurants, plus cafes for a refreshing drink or to try the local specialities.
Kalkan is renowned for its restaurants, and they spread right up through the town so don't forget to explore further. We have a restaurant review book in the villa so you can read some of our favourites – and feel free to add your own!
As the coastline here is predominantly cliffs, traditional beaches are rare, however Kalkan has its own town beach which is made of pebbles and offers wonderful swimming with fresh water springs offering a cold burst now and again! There is also a fantastic choice of stylish beach clubs to choose from set around the bay. For a small charge you can enjoy a sun lounger and use of the clubs' facilities, with all of them offering a restaurant/café for lunch or refreshments, and many offering a free boat service to them from the harbour.
Over the years Kalkan has grown from a traditional fishing village into the upmarket resort it is now, spreading up the steep hill and around the coastline into Kalamar Bay – a 10 /15 minute walk from Kalkan.
Kalamar is no less stunning. More peaceful than Kalkan, the bay has its own beach club which offers water skiing, a trampoline, and kayaks. The views from Kalamar are beautiful, with the area seeing a number of new luxury homes built over the last few years.

"Brilliant pool and fantastic facilities!"
Like being home from home the villa was ideal for our family visit in October. The kitchen was really well equipped which meant we could easily cook at home with our young family, and the pool was a great size. Bedrooms had brilliant views from the balcony and overall it was a vey relaxing stay. The walk into Kalkan took only about 15 mins, and we could easily catch a taxi back at very little cost, which was ideal for when the kids got tired.

"A perfect place to relax and enjoy the Turkish sunshine"
The villa was the perfect place to stay in order to relax and enjoy a week in the sunshine with all the family. The children split their time between playing in the lovely pool and the nearby Kalkan seaside that was a ten minute walk away. The villa had three lovely bedrooms, all with air conditioning and seperate bathrooms. These were all very tastefully decorated and modern with fantastic views from their individual balconies. Downstairs the sitting room, kitchen and dining area were very well set out and equipped in order to make living at the villa a pleasure. We will be back again.
