If you are looking for something different from the usual holiday villas in Kalkan, then Mulberry House is it. A refurbished village house, set in the mountain village of Islamlar, just 10 minutes drive from the cosmopolitan resort of Kalkan.

The village has a totally different feel from the coastal resorts. Mountain streams run abundantly to feed the nearby trout farms and restaurants, offering fresh fish and traditional local dishes – fried goat's cheese and fresh, succulent aubergines. The air is fresher and the views stunning – pine forests, ancient Lycian rock tombs and the sea shimmering in the distance.

Mulberry House was refurbished with respect to the style and traditions of the past. It offers modern yet comfortable accommodation, and echoes the design details that are truly Turkish – Turkish rugs and wall hangings, hand made furniture crafted from solid wood sourced from local forests and scattered antiques such as chests, mirrors and pottery.

Set amongst its own grapevines and fruit trees, Mulberry House provides the perfect setting to relax and unwind from the stresses of normal life.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The immediate locality is one of beautiful countryside and ancient sites. There are ancient rock tombs a short walk away and the famous Lycian Way – the Turkish equivalent to the National Trust public footpaths. The famous Islamlar trout restaurants are only 1 km away, as is the local village shop. For centuries, locals have used the village of Islamlar to escape the coastal heat during the summer. There is always a cooling breeze and shady areas where you can sit and relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of rural Turkish life that has not changed for centuries.

When you are ready for a bit more life, then the cosmopolitan resort of Kalkan is a ten minute drive away with its excellent restaurants and exclusive boutiques. It has a beautiful "old town" with cobbled streets winding down to the harbour, resplendent with cascading bougainvillea. Here you will also find supermarkets, banks, chemists and health care along with all the usual holiday activities - water sports, paragliding, diving etc. You can also book day trips here.

Slightly further afield are the ancient sites of Patara, Xantos and Tlos and the famous Saklikent Gorge. The nearby towns of Kas and Fethiye are also worth a visit at 25km and 80 km respectively.

We feel that the following poem left by one of our guests perfectly sums up Mulberry House - its ambience and that of the surrounding area -

"A nuthatch on a tree stump; woodsmoke and the call of a late cockerel drifting up the valley; the faithful called to prayer in Islamlar and Uzumlu; owls calling from the pines in the night; clear night sky with more stars than you can name; streams that bubble through the village; bells on home-coming goats; the chorus of crickets in the warm evening air; the grape harvest, making raisins - oh, and this is such a nice house too!" Rod and Jan Sayers, Gloucestershire, England. October 2010.

"Beautiful house with scenic views"

Booking this property online and paying the deposit/balance was straightforward. The owners were very approachable and gave us some good information before we arrived i.e. the main road had recently b… More

Thank you for your review and the positive comments you make regarding Mulberry House.

We have welcomed the renovation of the old village house opposite to Mulberry House as oppose to it being knocked down and replaced by a modern villa, which can often be the case. It will certainly help retain as well as enhance the traditional "real Turkey" feel of Islamlar village. The renovation has, however, caused some noise and, along with the resurfacing of the village road, some dust. The presence of builders has also affected the privacy of Mulberry House, which is normally quiet and secluded. We look forward to the completion of the house in time for next summer's guests.

The "tooting" van is, in fact, one of a number of mobile shops which bring bread, vegetables and basic necessities to the villagers, many of whom have no transport. Most of our guests find this a charming aspect of village life and welcome fresh bread in the morning!

The smell from the red bathroom is a common occurrence with the local "soakaway" method of drainage. We will, however, this winter, look into any other possible causes of this and take any remedial action necessary.

In the interests of retaining a relaxed feel at Mulberry house where guests could escape the stresses of normal life, we made a definite decision not to have wi/fi. The majority of guests welcome this respite from every day life! However, if we get more requests for this, then we will reconsider our decision.

And lastly, Mulberry House is in a rural environment and there are spiders and centipedes. Scorpions are not so common and we are sorry that you had to experience the sighting of what is only the second occurrence of a scorpion that we are aware of since we have owned Mulberry House.

We trust the above information is helpful.
