The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Lycia is a part of Turkey that is steeped in history, with so many places of interest to visit it's hard to know where to start. It is a country of mountains, rivers, deltas, sand-dunes, glorious sandy beaches - including Patara beach - all 18km of it. It has an abundance of historical sites - Ephesus, Patara, Myra, Kekova, Tlos, Xanthos - the list is almost endless. It overflows with the culture of a proud nation - the Mosques, markets, carpet weavers, farming and fishing communites.
Turkey is a predominantly Muslim nation, however it remains a secular state - as founded by Ataturk in the 1920s. You can see local people in traditional dress, but in tourist areas many locals dress in a westernised way.
Kalkan / Ortaalan area
The climate in Kalkan is similar to that of Southern California and the sea water temperature rarely drops below 16°c allowing a bathing season of around 9 months. The resort also benefits from the 'Meltem' - a seasonal wind which brings a welcome breeze to the scorching summer afternoons!
Kalkan is situated on Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast and was once a simple Turkish/Greek fishing village. Today's Kalkan is quietly sophisticated and postcard pretty with a multitude of excellent roof-top restaurants offering all manner of culinary delights, together with a good selection of stylish and atmospheric blues and jazz bars.
The village shops stay open until around midnight and are well stocked with interesting antiques, crafts, jewellery, carpets and clothing. Every Thursday there is an open market where you can buy just about anything – fantastic locally produced food, clothes, leather goods, carpets, linen etc.
You will also find in Kalkan: banks (& ATMs), post office, chemists, doctors, dentists, barbers/hairdressers, Turkish baths and assorted beauty treatment places.
The narrow streets of the old town are lined with whitewashed shuttered buildings festooned with brightly coloured bougainvillea intermingled with shops and terrace-topped restaurants. These streets twist down to the harbour, which is the focus of the village and here you can enjoy a meal whilst watching the world go by or by looking at the array of elegant gulets.
During the day, you can make use of one of the many 'beach clubs', engage in some of the local sporting activities (such as water-skiing, parascending, scuba diving, trekking etc), take a trip to one of the historical sites, drive a jeep up into the mountains, cruise on a gulet or simply relax by the Yelken pool.
Unlike some other Turkish coastal resorts, Kalkan's main economy derives from tourism and consequently, its inhabitants put much effort and pride into the town's historic preservation. As a result of very strict building regulations and the efforts of the Kalkan Foundation, the town has retained its charm and special ambience.
How to get there
Many operators fly directly from UK to Dalaman (closest airport), and Antalya (next closest). We recommend using a good flight search web site such as www.skyscanner.net, which will find you the best deals. Operators we have used include Onur Air, Monarch, Fly Thomas Cook, ThomsonFly.com and Aegean Flights.
The transfer from Dalaman to Kalkan takes around one and a half hours. We can put you in touch with local operators, or would be pleased to arrange a transfer on your behalf. The cost is usually in the region of £100 (£50 each way) for 2 people, or £120 for 3/4 people.
