The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Kalkan lies at the heart of Lycia, between Fethiye and Kas surrounded by the Taurus mountains, and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Situated on the Lycian Coast there are many places of interest in the area:

Xanthos -Xanthos was the political capital of the Lycian Federation and a splendid example of Lycian Civilisation.

Letoon- Letoon was the religious centre of Lycia, dedicated to the goddess Leto. It lies 4 KM from Xanthos near Kumluova village.

Kekova, -see the remains of an ancient sunken city beneath your boat.

Saklikent Gorge/Canyon is an incomparable natural wonder, at a distance of 50Km from Kalkan. 300 metres deep and 18km long,

Patara-known for its 18km long huge white sand beach and turtle reserve

The Lycian walk

Kalkan

Kalkan is a small peaceful Mediterranean resort and fishing town on the beautiful Turquoise Coast of Turkey. It has not been touched by mass tourism and has many fine qualities, but without a doubt, it is the people of Kalkan who make the town extra special.

Kalkan itself is a beautiful harbour resort surrounded by fantastic views nestling in the foot of the Taurus Mountains. The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea. Narrow streets twist through the town which still retains an authentic Turkish feel with plenty of eastern charm. There are many colourful shops to browse round and a huge variety of local cuisine can be tasted at over 300 different restaurants, each with it's own character but all friendly and welcoming to visitors. Sitting at a harbour side bar or restaurant you can watch the fisherman bring ashore their catches in the morning and see the wooden gulets returning from their trips around the bay and outlying islands, whilst drinking a cocktail as the sun sets.

There are any number of activities available should you wish for a more active break: a visit to the small beach for swimming, sunbathing or peddle boating; scuba diving trips; water sports; boat/gulet trips and beach clubs. Excursions to Lycian cities and tombs and Saklikent Gorge (longest canyon in Turkey) appeal to all the family . The traditional Turkish market on Thursday mornings is a must if you are looking for a bargain and enjoy a good haggle. There are regular bus trips to the town of Kas and to the beach resorts of Patara and Kaputas. Patara has 18 km of fantastic sandy beaches and is completely unspoilt with only one road leading to it and one beach bar/restaurant. It has regularly been voted amongst the best beaches in the world and is the site of sea turtle nesting so has protected status. At least one day of your holiday should be spent here; you will not be disappointed. If you are feeling adventurous tandem para-gliding can be arranged from Kalkan and Kas.
