The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

According to legend, Mark Antony chose Turkey's Turquoise Coast as a wedding present for his beloved Cleopatra;it was the most beautiful place he'd ever seen. While your wedding list may not stretch quite that far, you can still drive your way along the white sands and, yes, sample the turquoise waters between Bodrum and the resort town of Antalya.

Take a detour inland to see the crumbling city of Ephesus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. First a Greek and then a Roman city, today this vast complex contains a library, a market and even a sprawling curved theatre surrounded by columns and gigantic fallen stones.

Drive on to Pamukkale to take a dip in their sparkling salt baths and then indulge your adventurous side by paragliding off the cliffs that run along the coast. Alternatively, just make the most of the beaches including Patara beach voted one of the worlds top ten finest beaches, blue skies and clear water at any one of the resort towns in the Turkish Riviera.

The small and beautiful fishing port of Kalkan, situated on the stunning turquoise coast of Turkey, is un-spoilt by mass tourism and offers a more sophisticated experience than the usual resort town. Seeped in history Kalkan is one of the most beautiful locations along Turkey's fabulous Lycian Coast.

Kalkan offers a holiday destination suitable for the most discerning of tastes, with its narrow winding streets lined with beautiful old villas amongst local specialty shops and fabulous restaurants in historic buildings, there is plenty to discover and enjoy. Masses of brilliant bougainvillea flowers hang from the original Ottoman balconies adding to the stunning beauty and truly unique atmosphere of Kalkan.

Kalkan has embraced its Ottoman Greek architecture and strict building codes ensure that the town remains small and any developments blend in with the historic architecture. Despite its small size Kalkan has plenty to offer with numerous restaurants offering fabulous local cuisine and an abundance of fresh sea fayre and European dishes.

Kalkan marina is the ideal base from which to explore the fantastic coast, with private tour operators offering a multitude of daily excursions by sea and road. Alternatively if you prefer a more tailored experience you may wish to hire a private boat for the day.

Whether a thrill seeker or looking to explore the regions rich history Kalkan has much to offer you by day and night, although the nightlife is a more laidback style than you would find in many of Turkey's busier resorts.

Sunday Times "Kalkan attracts the kind of visitor who would also enjoy Tuscany or the Dordogne"

The Guardian likens the town to "the Italian Riviera minus the poseurs"
