The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The Turquoise Coast/Lycian region:

At the southwest corner of the Turkish coast lies one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of the Mediterranean, sometimes known as The Turkish Riviera. Deservedly so, with crystal clear waters lapping the Lycian coast with the majestic Taurus Mountains as a stunning backdrop. The climate is beautiful from April through to November. Summer lingers longer in this part of the Mediterranean, a month either side of many Mediterranean resorts in Europe. Nights are warmer too which means wonderful al fresco dining in May through to October.

Local areas:

There is more to this region than the fantastic views, particularly if you like visiting ancient sites such as Patara, Kas, Tlos, Letoon and Xanthos which are all fairly near to Kalkan, and can be reached by private car or taxi. Alternatively a day at Saklikent Gorge walking through icy waters to cool down in midsummer is always a treat and the scenery en-route is beautiful.

Kalkan was originally a fishing village and although it has grown into a popular holiday destination it still retains its traditional charm and the old quarter remains unspoilt. If you want to holiday where you won’t find noisy discos, big hotels or loud traffic Kalkan is the place for you. The pretty cobbled streets of the old town are an Aladdin's cave with an abundance of shops, selling clothes, jewellery, handbags, gifts etc. The restaurants in Kalkan offer an exceptionally high standard of food and service, (really fresh food, well presented and with good service.) Many restaurants have romantic roof terraces looking out over Kalkan and others are so low-key that many visitors never notice them. There are also some very sophisticated restaurants overlooking the harbour where you can ensure great service, food and atmosphere. Eating out is excellent value and the Turkish wines are surprisingly good.

Kapatus is probably one of the most stunning in the Mediterranean. It is a 10 minute drive or bus ride and Patara Beach is a 15 minutes from Kalkan. Kapatus beach lies between the sheer falez rocks, and is the best known natural bay formed by the Taurus Mountains running perpendicular to the shore. Patara beach is not far from the sites of Letoon and Xanthos and a day trip from Kalkan, Ka? or Fethiye could easily combine the sites. The beautiful 12 km-longPatara Beach, was voted one of the top beaches in the world by Times Online.

Local beaches:

Kalkan has a lovely local beach near to all of the amenities and the harbour. There is a great choice of beach clubs which offer water sports, restaurants and bathing platforms.

Boat trips:

A lazy day at sea looking out onto the turquoise waters or back to the amphitheatre that is Kalkan with a wonderful home made lunch, is a favourite day out. You can go further afield to the sunken city of Kekova too.

Chefs at home:

We can also arrange for a chef to cook in your apartment or villa, with your choice of menu, and with ingredients freshly cooked and bought the same day. You can even sit and watch Kazim, a favourite in Kalkan cook, and learn the ways of Turkish cuisine. Please ask and we can book chef for you with a deposit of £10 ( Average price per head all inclusive of food and cooking £12 )

Other activities:

Walks along the Lycian way and horse riding can be enjoyed, where you can take in the breathtaking scenery at a more leisurely pace.

One particular favourite is the canoe trip down the Xanthos river and

through the Patara national park with a BBQ for lunch. See the turtles along the river bank and swim in the river, great fun for all.

There is also the Saklikent Gorge, the longest and deepest in Turkey. Walk along the canyon and marvel at the extraordinary limestone walls soaring high above you. There is diving, paragliding, jeep safaris and many other excursions that make Kalkan a great holiday destination for all ages.

Ancient historic sites such as Patara, Xanthos, Pinara Letoon, and Tlos are all close by, with Kekova, Demre, Myra, Aspendos, Phaselis, Olympos slightly further afield.

Kalkan has remained authentic, sophisticated, with many superb restaurants, wonderful shopping and views that will remain in the memory for many years after departure.
