The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
Kalkan lies on the south west corner of the Turkish coast. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of the Mediterranean, sometimes known as The Turkish Riviera; and deservedly so with crystal clear waters lapping the Lycian coastline and the majestic Taurus mountains forming a backdrop and often plunging directly into the sea. The climate is beautiful from April through to November. Kalkan is an almost disarmingly laid-back village in magical surroundings; a dash of relaxed sophistication and a seemingly limitless variety of places to explore make Kalkan irresistible.
If you want to holiday in a sleepy fishing village where you won't find any noisy discos, big hotels or loud traffic, Kalkan is the place for you. There is more to this region than the fantastic views; there are some wonderful beaches such as Kaputas and Patara; it abounds with places of interest, particularly if you like visiting ancient sites such as Patara, Kas, Tlos, Letoon and Xanthos which are all nearby and can be reached by private car or taxi. Alternatively a day at sea on a Gullet cruise is not to be missed.
Kalkan is a beautiful and sophisticated, bougainvillea-covered harbour town set in the heart of the old Lycian region. It is relatively cosmopolitan, with wonderful restaurants and great places to stay. The Toros Mountains provide a stunning backdrop, whilst the views across the bay are remarkable and have been described by certain commentators as the "best in the Med".
Strict conservation laws have ensured that the heart of the old village retains an authentic ambience that attracts (according to the Sunday Times) the sort of visitor who might also be enchanted by, say, Tuscany or the Dordogne. The result is a discerning mix of predominantly British and Scandinavian guests together with Istanbul Turks attracted by Kalkan's reputation within Turkey.
Winding cobbled streets, colourful shops and excellent harbour-side or roof terrace restaurants and bars are combined with stunning views – whether you are looking up to the dramatic Toros mountains behind the town, or down across the harbour to the broad sweep of the Mediterranean .
Eating out is excellent value. The restaurants in Kalkan offer an exceptionally high standard of food and service, many restaurants have romantic roof terraces looking out over Kalkan and others are so low-key that many visitors never notice them. The pretty cobbled streets of the old town are an Aladdin's cave with an abundance of shops selling clothes, jewellery, handbags, gifts etc. There is also a weekly market on a Thursday.
A local mini-market is situated a short 3 minute walk from Villa Defne. If this is too arduous to contemplate, the owners will quite happily deliver your provisions, including their delicious fresh baked bread, right to the door. A mini-bus route (hail) runs past the villa on a regular time-table and will take you into the centre of Kalkan in less than 5 minutes. A 5 minute walk takes you to the renowned Villa Mahal (a boutique hotel voted by the Times Newspaper as having one of the best views in the world) where its beach club can be used and where free water taxis can be taken to Kalkan harbour. Also a 5 minute walk away is the Patara Prince resort where you can take advantage of its facilities such as: water sports, volleyball, tennis courts, snooker and scuba diving. They also have a health club with sauna, massage and other spa treatments available. If you have children you may be interested in their kids club. Down the hill towards Kisla is a local Turkish kitchen, highly recommended if you want to try some authentic Turkish cuisine, plus they will deliver piping hot dishes to your door.
Kalkan was originally a fishing village and although it has grown into a popular holiday destination it still retains its traditional charm and the old quarter remains unspoilt.

"Ultimately let down"
Villa Defne, is on the surface a nice, large and modern villa but simple things make a big difference. The biggest problem is the management agency, who showed little to no concern for the problems we … More
As the owner, I wish to reply to these comments as they tend to give a one-sided view.
Initially, I would like to apologise that the villa manager was not on hand to welcome you. There was some confusion in respect of the message I got from your booking agency and the information I passed on. Steps have been taken to ensure this will not happen again.
In respect of cleaning, it was made clear on the website you booked via that there is only a mid-week clean and final clean (most villas don't even offer the mid-week clean), not a personal butler service and cleaner on hand to clean and prepare as you require. The booking was for a self-contained villa, not a hotel where these services are provided – but at a much greater cost.
In respect of the additional cleaning fees, this was payable as it was obvious you had had a last night party and had just left everything where you put it down. When the cleaners arrived following your departure, there was plates of food and drink left all over the terrace, plates with food on had just been pushed into the dishwasher, one on top the other and not even turned on, and piled high in the sink and on the worktops. Also, bottles had been left everywhere, both in the bedrooms and around the terraces and this all took much longer than normal to clean and clear up. Extra cleaners had to be called in because the next guests were waiting to move in, hence the additional cleaning costs involved. (I was sent photos of the way the villa had been left and in 23 years of renting properties out, I have never seen one left in such a mess. Most people leave the villa as they would leave their own property!)
I am sorry that you feel the way you do but there are other reviews of our villa on Trip Advisor under the name “Defne Villa” and these all provide 5 stars and comments like: “spectacular views, tremendous holiday”; “Absolutely amazing villa and views”; “planning our return whilst still on this holiday”; and they include complementary remarks about the cleaners and management company.
