The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The coastline of this region of Turkey is truly spectacular. Rugged cliffs of pine forests plunge into turquoise sea. Between them are small bays of sand and shingle accessible only by boat. In ancient times the Lycians, mentioned in Homer's Iliad, settled here and the ruins of their cities and majestic rock tombs can easily be seen. This area is steeped in ancient history and consequently, there are numerous ancient sites to visit such as Tlos, Xanthos (the ancient Lycian capital) and Letoon as well as plenty of other places of interest.
Kalkan is an ideal destination from which to explore this region.
The Kalkan / Kisla area
Kalkan is a beautiful harbour resort surrounded by breathtaking scenery at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, with winding cobbled streets, colourful shops weekly market and excellent harbour-side or roof terrace restaurants and bars. Strict conservation laws have ensured that the heart of the old village retains an authentic ambience and an authentic Turkish feel.
There is a small pebble beach in the town and 10 minutes away by car or dolmus you will find the famous Kapatus beach. This is a lovely sand and pebble beach which is dramatically positioned at the foot of a huge ravine bordering a seductive turquoise sea. Though be warned there are many many steps. This is also a favourite stop for boat trips.
Patara Beach is a 30-minute journey by local dolmus (bus) or 20 minutes by car or taxi, and is regularly featured as one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful and undiscovered beaches. A magnificent sandy beach, 18 kilometers long and is also home to protected turtles. Entrance to the beach is through the ruins of the ancient city which is a fantastic place to explore and still being excavated which means that there is more to explore every time you visit. The beach has a cafe near the entrance providing drinks and snacks or meals at very reasonable prices. A morning exploring the ruins followed by lunch and a lazy afternoon on the beach is a lovely day out.
There are also several Beach Clubs around Kalkan Bay providing sunbathing platforms which have been cut into the cliff side. These are easily accessible with some providing a free taxi service. The swimming at the beach clubs is fabulous, with access steps leading directly from the rocks into the clear waters of the bay. There are restaurant and bar faciliites at the clubs with some providing water sports.Kalkan Beach Club is our own favourite. It is within 300 meters of the apartment and provides drinks and snacks at good prices ;it is invariably uncrowded and is child friendly with a small water slide for children and a small pebble beach area where the sea can be easily accessed.
Or you could try a Gulet trip which offers the ideal opportunity to get away from it all and explore the many beautiful secluded bays which are not accessible by road.
Islamlar is a mountain village 20 minutes drive from Kalkan where you can enjoy the famous trout restaurants whilst taking in breathtaking views of Kalkan and beyond. Berzigan is another fascinating village sitting on the bed of an old lake above Kalkan where traditional farming is of much interest to visitors.
Travel east of Kalkan by car or dolmus for 25 minutes along a stunning coastal road providing spectacular views to the sea, you will arrive at a beautiful natural harbour town called Kas which is framed by the dramatic Taurus Mountains with winding cobbled streets and many shops and a market all combine to provide a real Turkish flavour. Kas was first mentioned in Lycian times as Antiphellos and the modern town is built on the ancient site with the ruins of Antiphellos still scattered around the town.
Further afield there are many places to visit either by car or by way of organised excursions arranged via a number of Agents in Kalkan.
