The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Nestling at the foot of the Taurus mountains, Kalkan once a small fishing town, is now a peaceful Mediterranean resort on the beautiful Turquoise coast of Turkey. Whilst retaining much of its historical charm Kalkan has much to offer the modern tourist whether you are looking for somewhere to laze, meander and recharge your batteries or the excitement of an active holiday.
Diving, fishing, scuba diving, caneoing and white water rafting can all be booked at local tourist offices. Or try a Gulet trip which offers the ideal opportunity to get away from it all and explore the many beautiful secluded bays which are not accessible by road. If water sports are not for you then you may like to take to the skies with a tandem paragliding flight.
Kalkan is also an ideal destination from which to explore the surrounding famous archaeological sites, like the Lycian ruins at Patara, Letoon and Xanthos.
The Kalkan / Komurluk area
Kalkans whitewashed Ottoman houses tumble down the hillside through narrow streets and small cobbled alleyways to the sea. There is a small beach in the town, which sometimes gets crowded but they always seem to be able to find a couple of sunbeds and a parasol for you. However, most holidaymakers prefer to use one of the many beach clubs cut into the rocks at the water's edge around Kalkan Bay, all provide a wide choice of water sports, food and drinks facilities.
Throughout the day Kalkan is a sleepy relaxed place as many visitors choose to relax in the sun, swim or visit one of the historical sights. As the sun sets Kalkan comes alive and visitors have a seemingly endless choice of restaurants from traditional Turkish to modern and chic. Many tucked away down the narrow streets or on roof terraces affording magical views of the town and moonlit bay.
Kalkan is a very special place blessed by absence of mass tourism and yet having something for everyone. Kalkans beauty is well matched by the genuine warmth of its people who simply want you to enjoy their town as much as they do
Activities in and around Kalkan:
Day cruises: Ferry from Kalkan’s small yacht harbour to the wonderful, hidden Kaputas Beach and onwards to a swim in the incredible colours of the Blue Cave, the largest sea cave in Turkey. If you’re lucky you’ll spot the nearby dolphins or have freshly harpooned fish for lunch.
Moonlight cruises: arranged via local agents
Patara National Park and Beach: Patara’s stunning 12 km-long beach was voted one of the top beaches in the world by Times Online. The park includes the ancient site of Patara, the major naval and trading port of ancient Lycia. An extensive city with many ancient structures, including what may be the world's oldest lighthouse; it is a key biodiversity area, with rich birdlife and the protected breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle.
Pinara: One of the most spectacular sites in Lycia. A large red cliff dominates the site and hundreds of caves dug into its East façade make it look like a honeycomb.
Xanthos/Letoon: UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sacred cult centre of Lycia. Three side-by-side temples to national deities Leto, Artemis and Apollo
Tlos: best-known for the Ottoman feudal lord’s castle which sits on the top of the promontory with a spectacular 360° view of the Xanthus Valley. Also Roman era baths and necropolis with its carved house and temple type tombs.
Kekova-Simena: An area with beautiful scenery and underwater ruins accessible by boat.
Hiking: The Lycian Way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia, rated by the Sunday Times as one of the ten most beautiful long distance hikes of the world. Mild temperatures mean it can be walked through the winter.
Horse Riding at Bezirgan: The authentic Turkish village of Bezirgan comfortably nesting on an ancient mountain lake bed 17 km. away from Kalkan is a MUST.
Saklikent canyon: Half an hour from Kalkan is a canyon accessed by a spectacular narrow foot path suspended from the rock wall. Rafting also available.
Shopping: Kalkan market day is Thursday. Markets also available at Fethiye (Tuesday) and Kas (Friday).
Sea swimming: available from the beach club a 5 minute walk from the the villa, or in Kalkan from tiny decks set on the sea. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are neaby along the coast.
Scuba Diving / Snorkeling: arranged by professional divers departing from the Kalkan harbour.

well equipped villa, makes for a perfect holiday, couldnt fault anything about it. 10min walk into town with its many rooftop restaurants and shops. Would recommend taking a boat trip one day, very good value for money with great food. |

Our second stay at the villa (last visit 4 years ago), and again we were very impressed with all the care and attention that has been taken by the owner. Not just in the villa itself, but with all the supporting advice, guidance and assistance from the moment of first contact. Steve made it so simple for us; we just booked our flights, and then found that we were transported to the villa, welcomed by english speaking agent (available 24hr if required), villa cleaning and pool maintenance occured without us really knowing. Suddenly the two weeks were over and our transport arrived on time to take us to the airport. The ideal place to let you forget about everthing and just enjoy whatever you wish to do (most days absolutly nothing). Kalkan was easily reached and most evenings we visited various restaurants for dinner. Very large choice of dinning places and all providing a good to very excellent service and standards of food. Although you could easily dine in the villa as all facilities (including BBQ) are available. |

We (4 adults 4 teenagers) cant recommend this place enough. The pictures don`t do it justice! Steve(the owner) from start to finish made it a stress free experience from the transport arranged (brand new mercedes people carrier with safe drivers both ways) a welcome pack including tonic and fresh lemons for my duty free gin. tip buy it in england as branded spirits very expensive in Turkey. The cleaners came twice in our fortnight stopping for 2 hours totally "bottoming" the villa ,fresh linen, towels and pool towels. The pool man came every morning before we were up. A water cooler is provided a big bonus, just replace what is used. Taxi back from town is about £3 -the 6 seater ones chargnbg the same as 4 seaters! Food in town brilliant didnt have a bad meal Ipod deck is provided as is 2MBPS Internet. Overall a wonderful holiday ,feel free to contact me if you want anymore info. |
