The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region is a very beautiful part of southern Turkey. It is blessed with a very scenic coastline and small islands dotted in the warm sea which is ideal for swimming or water sports. Inland the old Turkey is still there for you to explore, with tiny villages, the lovely plain of Bezirgan and local markets and friendly locals.
The Lycia region was colonised first by the Greeks, then the Romans and Byzantines and the ruins of the cities they left behind are all around this area. Patara which also has an 18 kms long beach was the centre of the Lykian league and restorations are being done now on the parliament building. Xanthos, Pinara, Letoon,Sidyma and Tlos are all within easy reach of Kalkan via dolmus, tour bus or car.
The climate is Mediterranean with long hot summers from May to October and warm, wetter winters. Inland in the winter there is snow and the sight of mountains not far from Kalkan with snow on the top while it is still relatively warm in Kalkan is majestic. Patara beach is 18kms long and one of the safest swimming beaches on the coast. The loggerhead turtles come up there to lay their eggs, so it is a protected area with a small charge to enter the ruins and beach, but well worth it..
Kalkan is a vibrant little holiday town with plenty of local amenities. The street market is on Thursday with food, towels, watches, shoes, jewellery, and local ceramics to buy for holiday gifts. On Sundays there is another more ethnic market at Akbel at the top of the town. From Kalkan there are frequent dolmus (the local mini buses) to take you along the coastline to other beaches like Caputas, the one often featured on holiday brochures, or further afield to Fethiye for the massive market there on Tuesdays. All these makets are run and used by the local people and you will see more of the real Turkey if you visit them, especially, Kas and Fethiye.
Restaurants in Kalkan are quite a phenomenon. There are over 200 of the them and their menus vary from gozleme (the Turkish pancake filled with cheese, honey, potatoes) mezzes which are delicious hot or cold starters , right through to really expensive European style food with silver service. We prefer the truly Turkish food cooked by family run restaurants like Odak's at the top of the old town. Further down into the old town is the Merkez pavement cafe, an ideal place to take a break and watch all the people wandering past or meet up with your friends. Many restaurants have roof terraces where you can eat at night looking out over the whole town and watching the moon come up over the mountains. Turkish wine and beer are excellent.
Further up into the mountains is the unspoilt area of Islamlar, where there are many trout farms using the water that rushes off the mountain tops all year round. These provide a welcome visit in the relative cool with beautiful rural surroundings and views looking down on Kalkan, as well as providing you with an excellent meal of very fresh trout and plenty of extras, salad, chips, borek etc.
Bezirgan is a an amazing large plain behind the Tauros mountains which ring Kalkan, where the local inhabitants used to live in the Summer and only visit Kalkan in the winter for fishing. It is now an apple and sesame seed growing area and trips can be arranged in town to see this old countryside way of life.
Our apartment is situated in Ortaalan, which is a quiet suburb just 8 mins walk from the main town. Various activities and festivals are arranged during the summer months in Kalkan (see website www.turkishlocalnews.com). Kalkan is the centre of the Lykian Way, a well sign posted system of walks taking you all around the mountains and the main sites of the Lykian empire (you will need your walking boots and poles, but not recommended when it's too hot). Car hire, sports activities, scooter and cycle hire etc are all available in town.
Turkey is a vibrant progressive country with a strong culture of its own of which they are justifiably proud. Her people are constantly striving for advancement so you will see many changes in infrastructure every time you visit. They are extremely friendly and hospitable and you as a visitor will always be welcomed as a friend.
