Home description
Kalkan is friendly, warm and charming, with an assortment of cosmopolitan restaurants and bars, many with rooftop terraces and superb views, crammed between boutiques and shops in amongst the cobbled streets. The locals are very welcoming and the whole town has a unique feel that attracts visitors back year after year. Most holidaymakers you meet in Kalkan have either been before... or, if it is their first time, vow to return soon!
Kalkan is quiet by day - most holidaymakers choose either to relax by their pool, go to one of the many beach clubs, maybe take a boat trip or go sightseeing, or just browse the many shops and boutiques in the cobbled streets. All very relaxed! The town and harbour area come to life after sundown, when the bars and restaurants (we believe there are over 100, but who's counting?) open up and offer their hospitality. The food here is legendary; always of a high standard - thanks to the healthy competition - and the menus are extremely varied, from traditional Turkish recipes to international high cuisine; using fresh local produce and always prepared with tender loving care. These guys are very proud of what they do, and they do it very well.
Location is everything in this town - you really don't want to be stuck out on Kalamar Bay or in the Patara Prince resort, where you have to either get a taxi or a long walk to Kalkan's restaurants & bars; nor do you want to be stuck up on the hillside, facing a treacherous and difficult walk up an unlit road to your accommodation after an evening on the town. Our apartment's location is superb - very peaceful, with great views, but only an easy stroll from the town centre, so you can enjoy Kalkan's delights to the full but still get back in one piece!
Our other big advantage - the apartment is set in a small block of 5, sharing a large private pool, adjacent to the Nur Hotel, a small family establishment (also with its own pool) owned by our friend Baris - a local who speaks excellent English, knows the area inside-out and is always on hand for assistance. If you want to book a boat trip, for example, just ask Baris! Furthermore, our guests are very welcome to use his facilities, including the hotel's large pool, bar and restaurant.
Do you want the best of both worlds? The privacy and flexibility of a self-catering apartment, but with the facilities and services of a small hotel on tap if you want them? That's our Kalkan Secret!
Exterior (first floor apartment with balcony overlooking pool)
Spacious lounge with two large, comfortable sofa-beds
Air conditioned bedroom - king size bed!

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
At the centre of the Lycian region, Kalkan is well placed for visiting many historical sites such as Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos, Patara, Kekova (the Sunken City), Demre, Myra, Phaselis, Olympos, Aspendos and the Saklikent Gorge.
Kalkan / Central Kalkan area
It is quite possible to run out of superlatives when describing Kalkan.
In the year 400 BC, Herodotus said of Kalkan: “It is the closest place to the stars on Earth” and, according to rumour, one who drinks from Kalkan Spring can never leave…we don’t actually know if the Spring still exists, but it is easy to see why the rumour has persisted. One visit and you are hooked, starting with your first view of the town.
As you come over the hill on the main road into Kalkan, you will see a spectacular turquoise blue bay, with two islands (called "Snake and Mouse" by the locals) guarding the entrance to the harbour and marina. Then the village of Kalkan slowly unfolds before you, spreading up the hillside away from the sea.
Kalkan itself is an idyllic fishing village with a marina where yachts, gulets, fishing boats and dinghies bob up and down together in a sheltered harbour. It’s a small town (of only a few thousand) and this creates a wonderful intimate feeling. But despite it's small and intimate feel, there is still plenty to do in and around Kalkan.
There are serveral beach clubs with bathing platforms dotted around the bay, including some with PADI diving facilities... or hop on a boat , see the spectaular and historic coastline and marvel at how these salty old sea dogs can produce an excellent meal for several people from a galley the size of a walk-in wardrobe....
...failing that, guys, get a proper Turkish shave while the ladies immerse themselves in the shops and boutiques and haggle with the vendors. You might even develop a taste for the local tea, which they will offer you at the slightest excuse, even if you pop into the bank for some currency... hospitality is second nature here!

Guestbook
Briony B, London: "We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and just wish we could have had a little longer there!! We also both felt that all of the staff at The Nur Hotel were very welcoming and friendly which was lovely"! (2006)
Rick M, Oxon: "We had great time and really enjoyed Kalkan. The apartment was great... Baris was super and very helpful - his staff were also excellent. Please pass on our compliments... It was so nice having the privacy of the apartment whilst being able to use the Hotel Nur resources when needed. By the way - there might be one glass missing from inventory - Emma brought a drink down to the pool and it was whipped away by the very efficient bar staff - once empty, I hasten to add! We shall be returning and would like to take the apartment again, probably sometime in September (tbc) if it is available"? (2006)
