The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Once an old Greek fishing village called Kalamiki, Kalkan is now a vibrant resort for those in search of more than just sea and sand. Although Kalkan offers sun drenched-beaches and wonderful azure blue waters, it is rich in traditional charm and has an abundance of local ancient history. This is an ideal destination to explore the surrounding famous archaeological sites, like the Lycian ruins at Patara, Letoon and Xanthos. The Mediterranean coast of Turkey has an impressive 300 days of sunshine every year so you're almost guaranteed perfect cloudless skies during your summer holiday here. The season generally runs from May to October but it can be equally fabulous in April and November. The temp rises to the mid 40s in July and August with a more comfortable mid 30 degrees C May, June, September and October. This area of Turkey is part of the ancient kingdom of Lycia with the Lycian Way running through it, consequently the region is stuuffed with reminders of a bygone age - amphitheatres, mausoleums, ancient cities and sacred sites
Kalkan / Central Kalkan area
Kalkan’s whitewashed Ottoman houses tumble down the hillside through narrow streets and small cobbled alleyways to the sea. There is a small strip of beach in the town, but most people prefer to take one of the water taxi boats to the many beaches just around the headland to such places as Kalamar Bay where there is a wide choice of water sports available.
In the evening explore the bustling seafood restaurants that line the harbour front grilling freshly caught catches from the local fishing boats.
How to get there
Direct flights to Dalaman from most UK airports with XL, Thomson, Honour Air, BA and Turkish Ailines. 4 Hours flying time with 1 and half hour transfer to Kalkan.

Further details
The village of Kalkan descends to the sea and picturesque harbour in terraces of white-washed and wooden houses, many boasting ornately carved Ottoman timber balconies, draped in bougainvillaea. Very strict building rules ensure that the village remains small, in tact and unspoilt. The streets and alleyways are a veritable Aladdin's cave - think carpet bazaars, antique shops, ceramic stores, and arty jewellery shops where pieces are custom-made in silver, gold, turquoise and amber.
Cruises - a day at sea is a must. Take a trip on one of the many Gulet cruises from the harbour and visit stunning secluded coves. Beaches - Kalkan beach is next to the harbour. It's a pebble beach so the sea is unbelievably clear. Sandy Kaputas beach is 10 mins away while Patara Beach (30 mins away) is regularly voted one of the best beaches in the world. Ancient Ruins - Kalkan offers easy access to many great classical sites such as Xanthos, Patara, Letoon, Pinara and Tlos
Kalkan is famous throughout Turkey for its roof-top bars and restaurants which offer fabulous views of the harbour, the sea - and at night, the stars. For such a small place Kalkan has an astonishing range of restaurants. You can sit cross-legged on kilims and floor cushions and be served traditional Turkish fare, enjoy freshly-caught seafood at one of the smart harbour side establishments, or feast on the closest thing you'll get to home-cooking at one of the charmingly low-key, back street eateries

Guestbook
We have been back to Kalkan twice now, both times at Villa Florence, and have had the most magical of holidays. We have wonderful memories of long, lingering breakfasts by the pool terrace, relaxing under the shade of the banana trees during the day and balmy nights spotting shooting stars from the roof terrace. Our boys (9 and 12) particularly enjoyed the freedom of wandering into Kalkan on their own, ordering their own meals and being greeted by name after only 1 night. We've had some of the most memorable meals, ever, on the many roof top restaurants of which there seems to be an endless supply. We will definitely be back to Kalkan next year! Richard and Gillian Sayer, Kingston.
