The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
One of the world's 10 best walks and beaches for your enjoyment:
The 'Lycian Way' follows Greek and Roman roads and aqueducts, traditional nomad trails and forest tracks around the coast. Existing tracks have been linked up to form a continuous walking route that stretches over 530km and part of this walk and embarces Kalkan on its way. The Sunday Times voted the 'Lycian Way' one of the world's ten best walks and is much celebrated. The walking route is well away from any roads and you will have great fun trying to find the route. Allow a whole day for this adventure and take plenty of water and a picnic hamper as the sights and sounds are truly mesmerising.
Kalkan is a beautiful and picturesque harbour village with winding cobbled streets and alleyways cascading with vibrant bougainvillea, which has expanded gradually over recent years. The ancient old town retains its original character, surrounded by the awesome Taurus Mountains. At its centre lies the harbour with a mix of local fishing, traditional gulets and visiting yachts.
There are wealth of superb restaurants, the best to be had in coastal Turkey and for which Kalkan is very famous. Here you will find menus to suit all tastes from freshly caught sea fare to succulent locally reared beef steaks. These are mainly situated along the harbour front or on roof terraces offering excellent views over the sea. A wonderful evening can be enjoyed in a relaxing ambience soaking up the atmosphere of the village at night. Many restaurants feature annually in UK national newspapers and magazines. Although sophisticated and chic, these have still retained their Turkish charm. They are talk of the visitors well after their suntans have faded.
Shops are excellent quality and value with a range of merchandise available from arts & crafts to 'designer' handbags. There is also an excellent weekly Thursday bazaar providing many opportunities for bargain hunting and to tru pout your skill at haggling. There are several banks with ATM machines and a Post Officewhich is most hour sof the day and night, in the village.
Kalkan harbour and beach clubs:
Kalkan's pebble beach is a only a stroll away, though there are also many other small sandy coves within 10 min's drive ie. Kaputas beach which is a beautiful secluded cove and well worth a visit.
Patara beach, one of the world's top 10 beaches, with its 18km of long, golden, unspoilt sands is only a 8 minute drive away or using the inexpensive local transport ) Dolmus). Kalkan harbour also provides gulet trips around the bays for relaxing days out where you can enjoy excellent cusine on board and swim in the crystal clear blue waters. There are also many beach clubs close by, which provide excellent sunbathing platforms, direct sea access & great lunches on site restaurants with superb serive.
Kas, 18miles away, is a pretty town with more of the feel of a working town containing a wider range of shops, a newly constructed marina and businesses.
Fethiye is the regional capital and well worth the hour's drive for significant shopping and the joys of its weekly bazaar.
The whole area is rich in historical sites, with wealth of classical sites where you can wonder around amphitheatres and amongst the world famous ruins of temples in Patara.
