The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Once a sleepy sponge fishing village, Kalkan has been transformed into one of the most sought after resorts on the Turkish coast, attracting a similar clientele to Tuscany, yet remaining untouched by mass tourism. Spanning an almost perfect circular bay, the village is delightful, with handsome old houses lining quaint old cobbled streets, draped in vibrant bougainvillaea.
An abundance of restaurants and shops line the streets and harbour, many utilizing roof terraces to overlook the stunning bay. Boat trips leave daily from the harbour and cost less than £20, lunch included.
A trip to the trout farms in the hills is a must, or those who enjoy shopping can browse around the friendly local markets and shops of nearby towns of Kas or Fethiye. The more adventurous can visit the ghost town, walk the gorges or visit the ancient sites along the Lycian Way …
Kalkan public beach next to the harbour. Kaputas Beach to the east of Kalkan towards Kas. Patara Beach is 19 kilometres from Kalkan. (20 minutes by car or 30 minutes by Dolmus)
Beach Clubs include Kalkan Beach Club. Villa Mahal, Palm Beach, Club Patara, all within easy reach of the apartment all offer a wide variety of watersports, sun beds and restaurants.
The Kalkan / Kisla area
Located on the Turquoise Coast of Turkey and with the soaring Taurus Mountains as a backdrop, lies the
postcard pretty village of Kalkan. Set in the centre of the ancient Lycian Kingdom this simple fishing village has retained much of its character.
The ancient sites of Xanthos, Letoon, Pinar, Tlos, and Patara are within easy reach of Kalkan. Slightly further are Kekova, Demre, Myra, Phaselis, Olympos and Aspendos.
Driving up into the mountains behind Kalkan and travelling throughout stunning scenery, you will come across a fertile plain that was once a prehistoric lake. Amongst the fields and orchards is the village of Bezirgan where you will find the REAL Turkey along with several Lycian rock tombs. Islamlar is also a lovely drive not far up the mountain from Kalkan and is famous for its trout farms.
Although Kalkan has its own shingle beach next to the harbour, there are a number of beach clubs around Kalkan bay. Set in stunning surroundings these clubs are rock platforms and terraces cut into the hillside at the waters edge with the lower terraces having steps into the sea. They are on a number of levels so it never gets too crowded.
Sun loungers and parasols are provided as well as showers and WCs. All beach clubs provide a first class drinks and bar service as well as excellent restaurants.
You can swim, snorkle and fish and for the more adventurous watersports are available for a small local charge. Access to beach clubs can be either walking, water taxi, car and some offer a free taxi or minibus service to and from your accommodation.
Steps lead down from Seafront apartment to the exclusive boutique hotel Villa Mahal and the waters edge where you can enjoy Villa Mahal's beach club facilities, restaurants or take the taxi boat directly across to Kalkan.
The dramatic Kaputas beach is a 5 minute journey from Kalkan where its beautiful sandy beach is found at the foot of a revine down many steps.
Patara Beach in approximately 20 minutes and is of pure sand and dunes stretching 12 miles. Entrance to the beach is through the ruins of the ancient city. Development is banned and it is home to the protected loggerhead turtles which lay their eggs on the beach.
Kas, a 30 minute drive away from Kalkan is worth a visit just for the journey alone! The road clings to the edge of the coastal road providing spectacular views out to sea. It was built on the ancient site of Amtiphellos and ruins can still be seen scattered around the town. A small well preserved Hellenistic amphitheatre
still remains just along from the harbour and situated behind the amphitheatre on top of a hill is a Doric
tomb. This attractive harbour town is more cosmopolitan than Kalkan and has many shops, restaurants
and bars.
Fethiye is the largest working town in the region with a bustling market and casbah style shopping area in the old town. A variety of restaurants and bars overlook the marina where daily boat trips will take you around the bay and its twelve islands. Carved into the limestone cliffs behind the town you will find rock tombs dating back to 4th Century BC.
Olu Deniz has a stunning beach and lagoon which you will always see in Turkish brochures. It has a lovely traffic free promenade lined with cafe/bars, shops and is still popular with backpackers coming for the
paragliding. For the experience of a lifetime try a paragliding jump in tandem with a qualified instructor. As you leave the 2000 metre high mountain you will find yourself soaring above the bay taking in the breathtaking view of the lagoon before gently gliding down to the beach.

Just returned from a wonderful holiday in this fabulous apartment. Our 11th holiday in Kalkan since 2007 and our 6th stay at Eagles Nest - a recommendation in itself. Have tried other places in Kalkan but in our opinion this is the place to stay if you want a totally relaxing holiday with stunning views over Kalkan which are quite simply breathtaking. Nothing better than sitting on the terrace with a sundowner enjoying some glorious sunsets and gazing at the twinkling lights of Kalkan town by night - perfect! The apartment itself is absolutely huge, very comfortable and beautifully furnished with some lovely finishing touches including local pieces. There is loads of storage space and it is equipped to the highest standard. The owners were very helpful and provided all the information and tips we required for our stay. They have also put together an excellent guest manual in the apartment and should be very proud of their achievements ensuring that guests have the best possible holiday. A highly recommended apartment to which we would return without hesitation in the future. |

We have just returned from a perfect three week stay at Eagle's Nest. This was our first time in Turkey and I don't think we could have picked a better place. The apartment is huge and is stunning both inside and outside it is very well equipped for a perfect relaxing break. The view from the terrace is beyond compare and we loved sitting in the morning just watching the boats sail out of the harbour. We found the apartment very well appointed in every respect and we particularly loved the water cooler which was much appreciated in the summer heat. Dirk, the owner was extremely helpful to deal with both prior to and during our stay, he assisted us with transfers etc. The complex itself is situated a little bit out of Kalkan and we generally used the water taxis (5TYL) or a local taxi driver (15 TYL) to take us in and out of Kalkan. It is possible to walk into Kalkan, however in the searing summer heat and with very poor access this can be difficult. Kalkan is a beautiful little town with the best selection of restaurants we have every come across in our travels. This is the first time I have every written a review of any accommodation, however I feel I have to say that if you are thinking of visiting Kalkan then Eagle's Nest is simply beautiful and you will love it - we certainly did and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it - we will definitely return in the future. |
