The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Mediterranean Coast extends from Morocco in the west to Egypt in the east and is the aggregation of a large quantity of small, independent coastal basins draining to the sea.
Turkey's Mediterranean shore, called the Turquoise Coast, is nearly 1600 km (994 miles) long, scattered with fine-sand beaches and sprinkled abundantly with classical cities turned to picturesque ruins.
The Turquoise Coast is the first place to think of when you're considering a seaside vacation in Turkey. It has more and better beaches and resorts than does the Aegean coast and warmer.
The Taurus (Toros) Mountains form a dramatic backdrop along much of the coast, often dropping steeply right into the sea, but in some places rivers have washed down enough sediment over the ages to form beaches backed by fertile alluvial plains good for growing cotton, vegetables and even tropical fruits like bananas.
The Kalkan / Kisla area
Welcome to Kalkan and the old Custom House, we are sure that you will enjoy you here. Kalkan is situated on the Fethiye-Antalya coastal road to 79 km east of Fethiye, 220 km west to Antalya.Once the Greek town of Kalamaki, Kalkan used to thrive mainly on its local fishing industry and the export of olives from its surrounding villages.
These days Kalkan attracts a sophisticated crowd who enjoy its stunning beauty and peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Kalkan itself is home to an abundance of quality restaurants, atmospheric cafes, boutigues selling a range of local arts and crafts , and of course a panaromic view from almost any point within its quaint cobbled streets.
Kalkan is also a perfect place to explore the surrounding area . There is a choice from the cool , serene lakes high in the Taurus Mountains,an abundance of ancients Lycian ruins along the coast and wiıth in the lowlands, boat trips along the costline or to the sunken city of Kekova or thrilling walk along The Gorge of Saklikent.
Kalkan curls snuggly around a historic harbour sheltered at the foot of the towering Taurus Mountains. The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea.
Besides the famous "Kalkan Style" historic architecture, the many excellent restaurants of Kalkan contribute to the special atmosphere within Kalkan. Good dining has always been the way of life in Kalkan and continues today. In fact, Kalkan is said to have the highest number of restaurants and bars per inhabitant or square meter on the Turkish coast .
Additionally, Kalkan is especially renowned in Turkey for its numerous roof terrace restaurants and bars which offer a wonderful view of the town, sea and stars. It's also nice to sit at one of the many fine harbour-side restaurants and watch the pleasure boats and fishermen leave early in the morning as you eat your breakfast, or see the fishing boats return with the day's catch in the evening.
