The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Kalkan is probably the most picturesque and unspoilt fishing village to be found anywhere in Turkey. Kalkan has not been touched by mass tourism, set amidst a breathtaking landscape with mountains as a backdrop, the village slopes down to a beautiful harbour and Mediterranean bay; you soon realize why so many articles have been written applauding its beauty

Because of its great charm, Kalkan has a growing number of perennial visitors who say the town is the only holiday destination they would choose to visit repeatedly. There is simply no other town quite like Kalkan along the Turkish coast.

Kalkan curls snugly around an ancient harbour sheltered at the foot of the towering Taurus Mountains. The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea. Narrow streets twist down to the harbour through the historic town and are lined with listed whitewashed villas with shuttered windows situated alongside small local craft shops and restaurants.
Overhead hang original ornately carved Ottoman timber balconies garlanded with brilliantly coloured bougainvillea cascading to the streets below. It is a very special place.

In the heart of the old town and surrounding the harbour are scores of restaurants and tavernas, many having roof terraces with views out to sea. This really is the place to come if you enjoy browsing through quaint local gift shops and boutiques and enjoying beautiful evenings in traditional restaurants.

Local market day for the area is held on a Thursday. Try your hand at bartering or go along and have a laugh at the local banter. Some good quality bargains are available, and never accept the opening price.

Kalkan / Kisla area

Getting around without a car is quite easy from Kisla. Taxis are quite reasonable and in addition we have negotiated a discounted rate with a local driver, but you could always try the free water taxi that runs from the Kalkan Beach Park. It provides a charming and relaxing way to view the coast line. Also nearby is the Mahal beach club which is undoubtedly Kalkan’s finest – consisting of platforms built into the hillside, hidden under the welcoming shade of the olive trees. A waterside restaurant provides refreshments throughout the day and a water taxi runs from here too. In addition to the restaurants in walking distance there is also one that offers a courtesy minibus service to bring you to and from the villa, with magnificent views thrown in for free!

Once in Kalkan there are buses, the usual Dolmuses, and next to the bus station is the taxi rank. Buses run everywhere, to the Tuesday market in Fethiye, Patara beach, Kaputas beach and the neighbouring town of Kas.

If you go shopping in the supermarkets in Kalkan if you ask they will usually give you a lift back to the villa with your groceries. Alternatively, just buy your shopping and they will be happy to deliver it for you.

There are plenty of tour companies that will organise tours to all the excursions I’ve listed below:

Excursions
The best one is to charter one of the boats from Kalkan harbour exclusively for your party and they’ll take you out for a whole day going round the local bays with plenty of stops for swimming, you can fish from the side of the boat. Lunch and refreshments are provided too.

Kekova
The sunken city. An excellent day out with the right tour guide, see more at http://www.hitit.co.uk/tosee/Kekova/index.html

Saklikent Gorge

The nearest airport is Dalaman and we can arrange transfers for you, it takes about 1½ hours. We can also arrange a car if you need one. We have arranged a discounted taxi rate with a local driver and in addition to the restaurants in walking distance there is also one that offers a courtesy minibus service to bring you to and from the villa.
