The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Ancient Lycia in south western Turkey runs from Ekincik to Antalya in a semi-circle of some of the most mountainous and dramatic landscape anywhere in Turkey. The Taurus Mountains rise to over ten thousand feet and the highest peaks are snow covered right into early summer. It's magnificent scenery with it's lakes, woods and forests, it's stunning coast line and superb ruins of two dozen cities make Lycia a place to explore and enjoy.
Lycia's coast line runs for several hundred kilometres, borders the Mediterranean and attracts yachtsmen to the crystal clear waters and near perfect climate. The many islands, coves and beautiful beaches such as Patara, one of the top ten in the world ( Sunday Times 2005) and Kaputus, within 15 minutes of Kalkan and Olu Deniz, 45 minutes away, add to Lycia 's unique historic and scenic appeal to visitors.
At a latitude of 36 degrees, Kalkan is one of the most southerly points of Turkey's Mediterranean coast and enjoys sunny, warm days most of the year. Spring and autumn are popular times to visit with temperatures into the 70's not unusual right through to December.
The UNESCO world heritage site of Xanthos was Lycia's capital city for much of it's history and the ruins of the principal cities of Tlos, Myra, Pinara and Partara, all close to Kalkan attract visitors from all over the world to look at the ancient ruins dating back over 2000 years. The British museum also has an extensive collection of Lycian artefacts.
Patara beach is stunning and makes an enjoyable visit as well as the nearby ancient site of Patara, with its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. Part of a national park, it is a key biodiversity area, rich in birdlife and the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta). Luckily the beach has been declared off-limits for development because of the turtles, they are nearing extinction and protection of their nesting sites on the Turkish coast is very important.
The beach is closed after sunset from May to October to give the turtles peace in which to lay their eggs as it is the second most important turtle nesting beach in Turkey.
The beach is an 12 kilometer-long strip of sand bordered on its ends by mountains and along its length by sand dunes and the large marshy area which once was the harbour of Patara. Voted as one of the top beaches in the world by Times Online, Best of 2005 and known as the "widest beach of the northern Mediterranean. Only about a 15 minute stroll from some of the major ruins, even in the height of summer it is never crowded. The absence of development and no water sports means that it is always peaceful. There is only one café near the end of the path to the beach, it also rents out sunbeds and umbrellas.

"Second Summer in a row here"
After such an amazing summer here last year we returned again for summer 2013, we stayed a couple of weeks in Kalkan which is about a 30 minute drive from here and and then 2 weeks here.We absolutely … More

We stayed at this villa for 3 weeks in the summer and loved every minute of it. When we arrived at the airport we were then taken to the villa, were our complimentary free car was. We had expected to get the car at the airport but they took us right to the villa which was an excellent start. The villa was really nice inside and the views you get are amazing, especially at sunset and sunrise, the views are breath taking.
There is a local farmer Sulejman who takes care of the 8 properties, he does an excellent job. He cleans the pool and surrounding areas on a daily basis, his wife and kids even brought us nice fresh fruit from the farm. Couldnt have wished for more helpful friendlier people to look after the villa's.
The villa is set up in the mountains so you do get a great view, car hire is essential when staying here. We drove to a few of the neighbouring towns during our stay, Kalkan was our favourite which we went to on several occasions.
The people who rent out these villa's could not be more helpful if they tried, they were first class from start to finish, anything we wanted or any advice we needed, we got it instantly from them. They were that helpful that we are already looking at booking to stay with them again next summer.
There were hardly any bugs or mosquitos at all which we were very surprised with being up the mountains, we did not have any problems during our stay. We were made to feel extremely welcome from start to finish and our holiday would not have been as good if we did not have the amazing people helping us.
Cant speak highly enough of our stay, amazing.
