The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Kalkan enjoys a fantastic climate. Ten months of sunshine a year, with the hottest months being July and August when temperatures can reach 35C. January and February are probably the wettest months, although some sunshine is probable in between showers and the temperatures are still warm.
Like much of Turkey, Kalkan is surrounded by historical and geographical sites. Pinara, Patara, Xanthos, Thlos and Myra cover ancient settlements from the Byzantine, Roman and Lycian periods to name but a few. The famous beach at Ölü Deniz is an hours drive from Kalkan.
The spectacular gorge of Saklikent lies approximately one hour away from Kalkan by car/taxi. The drive to the gorge goes through pine forests, and runs beside a pretty riverbed. There are restaurants where you can sit in Turkish style seating on river platforms, in the shade. Walking through the gorge is fun. You start the walk via a suspended bridge, and then wade across the ice-cold river (up to about knee height), then the walk takes you along the gorge as far as you wish to go. You can walk a considerable way, without too much climbing, but practical shoes are recommended (and these are available for hire in the gorge). A change of clothes is also advisable - just in case!
Kalkan area
Kalkan is a pretty unspoilt, small, friendly town. There is a market on Thursdays selling local produce and clothes and jewellery etc. Kalkan itself has a man made pebble beach, but is better known for its beach clubs and proximity to the famous beaches of Patara and Kaputas cove. The beach clubs are private rock bathing platforms with intimate café/restaurants, just a 5 minute water taxi ride round the bay. The waters around Kalkan bay have a Blue Flag award for cleanliness and are ideal for all forms of water sports. Learn to dive at one of the diving schools or simply charter a small boat and its crew for the day.
There are many romantic rooftop restaurants - serving delicious Turkish and international dishes. It 's tiny cobbled streets in the old quarter of the town are home to all manner of small boutique shops selling everything from silver to shoes. There are plenty of small supermarkets providing the essentials for self-catering holidays, and English is widely spoken. There is a bank and port-office for money exchange and also shops will exchange currency too. Kalkan is situated half an hour from Kas, and about one hour from Fethiye. Fethiye, with its massive market on Tuesdays, bustling harbour, from which boat trips can be taking - inlcuding visits to neighbouring Greek islands. Ancient rock tombs, and a castle are fascinating places to explore and there is a wide selection of shops. .
Kalkan beach has beds and sunshades for hire, also pedaloes. It is a pebble beach with freshwater springs coming into the bay providing refreshing cool water spots in the warm sea. The sandy beach of Kaputas is only 10 minutes by car or Dolmus - and the magnificent white sand beach of Patara, which stretches for 18km, is only 20 minutes by car or 30 minutes by Dolmus. The beach at Patara is home to nesting turtles - which are protected by a conservation order, and at the back of the beach in the surrounding fields there are numerous historical roman ruins - including a partial amphitheatre.
