The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
Kalkan is on Turkey’s 'Turquoise Coast', so-called because of the stunning, crystal-clear, blue coastal waters of this beautiful Mediterranean area, and is located in the region that corresponds to ancient Lycia. The weather is reliably excellent, there are heaps of things to see and do, and Kalkan makes the perfect base to plan short trips for a day or two in the area.
From Marmaris to Antalya there are a score of sites worth seeing: from Lycian, Dorian, Roman, and other ancient civilisations. Highlights include historical Lycian cities such as Patara, Letoon, Tlos, Myra, Simena, and just about everything in the Xanthos valley, not forgetting the magical site at Olympos.
In addition to visiting the ancient Lycian sites, you can go sunning and swimming at the gorgeous sandy beaches of Patara (25 minutes from Kalkan) and Kaputas (10 minutes), take a boat ride to the sunken city of Kekova, visit the harbour towns of Kas (25 minutes) and Fethyie (1 hour) and their markets, go paragliding over Oludeniz and Kas, visit Islamlar (famous for its trout farms) and the ruins of the Greek village Kayakoy, go wading in the cool waters of the Saklikent Gorge, or even use your passport to get to the Greek island of Kastellorizo (aka Meis), which is only a twenty-minute ferry ride from Kas.
Check our photographs for some examples!
They are all well worth a trip. Most are accessible by local organised excursions or the frequent-running buses. Otherwise, there are many car rental places in Kalkan to get you on your way.
Also, consider visiting out of season if you can. Any time from late April to mid October is fine and the spring in particular is lovely down here. In the autumn the water is still warm and you should find everything easier and cheaper outside of the July/August rush.
Kalkan, once a small Greek fishing village, sits nestled at the foot of the towering Taurus mountains which plummet steeply into the warm, turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Now a small, picture-perfect harbour town, it has lost none of its charm, and oozes character that is reflective of its multi-cultural past.
The narrow streets of the Old Town, lined with whitewashed, shuttered houses, draped in brightly coloured bougainvilleas, twist down to the picturesque harbour set on the cusp of a spectacular bay, dotted with small islands which tease and impel your view all the way to the open Mediterranean horizon.
Kalkan is more sophisticated than the usual resort and has not been touched by mass tourism. It benefits from an average of 300 days sunshine a year. Daytime temperatures over the winter months can reach the mid 20sC and seldom fall below 15C. The hottest months are July and August, when temperatures reach the high 30sC. A gentle breeze in the afternoons helps to keep temperatures at a comfortable level; otherwise, if it gets too hot, you can dip into the pool or the sea, where the temperature is generally 26C.
The apartment is located within ten-minutes’ easy walking distance from all local amenities and only a few minutes more from the Old Town, harbour and local beach. There are several banks, a post office, a variety of supermarkets, a large weekly market (every Thursday) and a couple of internet cafes.
The local beach, which is pebbley but still very nice, is near the harbour. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired for a small charge. There is a playpark next to the beach and, when you’re ready for lunch or a daytime snack, you will find numerous tatsteful restaurants and bars along the harbour and shoreline.
Kalkan has a host of beach clubs all accessible by free boat-taxi or road-taxi. Free boat-taxis run to/from the harbour to the three beach clubs in Kisla. Any road-taxi will take you to the other beach clubs, such as those in Kalamar; the drivers will be paid by the club on arrival, and the club will arrange your free trip back home.
All beach clubs offer the choice of total relaxation or, for the more energetic, water-skiing, jet-skiing, scuba-diving and plenty of other water-related activities.
For even more relaxation, you may wish to try a Turkish massage in one of the local spas.
If you enjoy shopping you will not be disappointed. There is an excellent range of shops offering everything from Turkish antiques, rugs, carpets, crafts, clothing and jewellery, including ‘designer’ goods.
The town is renowned for its fine and varied selection of restaurants, eateries and bars, with menus to suit every taste and pocket – there are over 100 from which to choose. The most popular are the roof-terrace and harbourside restaurants with breath-taking views, inviting staff, a don’t-want-to-leave ambience and a variety of entertainment, from traditional folk music, jazz, blues, pop and, of course, belly-dancing.
For out-of-town activities, you can go to the nearby beaches, go hiking on the Lycian way, take a relaxing all-day cruise on a gullet, or take a trip to one of the historical sites of ancient Lycia. There are many places to visit within a short distance of Kalkan, as mentioned in the section above, and local tour operators offer boat trips and tours at reasonable prices. Of course car and scooter rental are also available. Boat trips leave daily from the harbour; the itinerary can be personalised to your requirements and if desired you can book in advance.
In short ... you will find everything you need here to have a FABULOUS holiday!

"A tranquil, beautiful, stylish apartment with spectacular sea views"
I had a fabulous time in Kalkan for the 8 days that I stayed in this beautiful apartment. It has all the ammenities for cooking in the apartment if you wish and there is a lovely dining table in which to sit with a view of the sea through the glass sliding doors. Or if you wish, you can do as I did, you can eat your meals on the balcony outside and enjoy a peaceful breakfast looking out to a tranquil blue sea. The apartment has stylish wrought iron stairs leading up to the top floor and the beds have very high quality mattresses and bed linen. I slept well there and it is quiet. The shower rooms are spacious and on two floors. I stayed in one of the top rooms where I had the patio, so I would jump out of bed and sunbath first thing. By the way it was around 36 degrees everyday, i never saw one cloudy day. It is a short walk to the old town of Kalkan which has some amazing restaurants, I tried many when I didn't cook in the apartment at night. Also there are some designer shops, one which specialises in leather bags, I bought a chanel bag for a very good price. The agent on the property lives next door and is very helpful with arranging taxis if you need one. I used it a few times to go to the wonderful Kalama beach club, you can lay on luxurious cushions and it has a lemonade to die for. You can also get a taxi to Patara beach which is a place of such natural beauty, it is breathtaking. I didn't have a car but if you do then there is the garage in front of the property, discreetly hidden. I must not forget the Infinity pool as that was one of the chief highlights. You literally feel like the sea is going on forever, and I was particularly moved by the experience of laying in the pool, listening to the noon day salah (prayer) echoing across Kalkan bay. That was a unique experience. There are also brochures in the apartment giving you comprehensive information regarding the many tours to amazing ruins such as those at Tlos and the sunken water city of ancient Lycia. I really enjoyed that one, it is a fantastic boat trip, I sunbathed on the deck and swam in the sea and saw a pirates cave!! Lots of fun because the Turkish people are so incredibly friendly! I have been to Italy and Spain etc, many places in Europe but, I have to say that the Turkish were the most hospitable people I have ever encountered. Needless to day I will not only be returning to Turkey this summer, but have infact booked this very apartment for the first week in September, and am bringing my son with me this time. That's how much I loved the whole experience.

"Fabulous apartment, fabulous view, fabulous town, fabulous country."
The location of Bay Vista Penthouse is perfect for the best view of Kalkan Bay and the harbour from the pool, the balconies and the roof terrace. And it is only a very short walking distance from the amenities and Old Town, so no taxis needed. We wanted for nothing on this holiday. The apartment is fully appointed. Everything is brand new. We were greeted by the owner's Kalkan-based agent and he was very happy to offer advice and recommendations about entertainment and activities in the region, of which there are many. This was our first trip to Kalkan and it definitely won't be our last. And when we do go, we will be booking this apartment again.
