The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
the Lycia Region
Turkeys Mediteranean coast runs for almost 1000 miles (1600km) with many resorts located along its lenght and some spectacular beaches. There is also a sprinkling of islands to visit and many ancient ruins.
The local town of Kas is 27km away from Kalkan. kas is predominantly pedestrenised providing pleasant streets and alleys of old restored stone and wooden houses to meander around. there are plenty of typicaly turkish shops to enjoya browse and the harbour restaurants give plenty of oppertunity for sampling delicious Turkish dishes. The market is also held in Kas on a friday.
Fethiye, another coastal town is 90km away. It is situated at the foot of the Mando Mountains and is popular for boat trips, yachting and watersports.
The Saklikent Gorge is a fabulous gorge to visit whilst in Fethiye. There are plenty of ancient ruins, such as the Amyntas and Rock Tombs to find along with the magnificent views from the mountain top village of Tlos, now a disparate roman, byzantine site. Saklikent (hidden) canyon is situated near the 'toros' mountains and was discovered only 20 years ago. The canyon is 300 metres deep and is 18km long, one of the longest in Europe. Not far from Patara is the ancient Lycian city of Xanthos. This is one of many Lycian sites near Kalkan.
Kalkan was originaly a small fishing village that has grown into a stunning exclusive town nestled in to the hillside. Kalkan has an amazing selection of restaurants ranging from small inexpensive family run places to exclusive harbourside or roof top restaurants with stunning views of the sea. There is an array of shops in the old town for your holiday gifts selling a wide range of goods including high quality leather goods , arts and crafts, jewellery and ceramics and of course a visit to the local market on a thursday will be an essential part of your holiday.
Kalkan old town is a 15 minute walk from Palmiye. The nearest supermarket is a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive away.
Kas is approximately 25 minutes drive and Fethiye is approx 55 minutes away
