The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
This part of Turkey is stunningly beautiful at all times of the year. Surrounded by the Taurus mountains which are snow covered until early summer, it has wonderful scenery with lakes, forests and, of course, its coast line. Above all it is always green with a changing cover of local flowers, herbs and plants.
The summers are hot but there is normally a cooling breeze in Kiziltas. Spring and Autumn are pleasant with daytime temperatures in the 70s. January and February are normally the wettest and coldest time of the year but, even then, there are plenty of sunny days.
The area of Lycia was a federation of ancient cities and later a province of the Roman Empire. The Lycian League was the first federation in the world with democratic principles which later influenced the United States Constitution. The ruins of these cities are very popular with sightseeers
The Lycian way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia in southern Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya and attracts many walkers in the cooler months.
Kalkan is a little hidden gem – an upmarket destination with great charm and untouched by mass tourism. The old village has narrow winding roads with old whitewashed houses covered in bougainvillea. It is famous for its great number and variety of restaurants which offer some of the best dining in Turkey. You can eat on one of the many rooftops, watching the twinkling lights around the bay or have a romantic dinner at one of the harbour restaurants. You will be spoilt for choice. Kalkan has several banks and supermarkets and a Thursday market. It also has shops selling quality goods and gifts.
In the summer, take a boat trip around local baysand islands or to the Greek island of Meis, spend the day in one of the beach clubs or at Patara beach which has been voted one of the best in the world. If you feel more adventurous go scuba diving, canoeing or para gliding, or go one one of the safari trips or horse riding.
If you enjoy haggling for bargains visit the enormous Fethiye market.
