The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
The Turquoise Coast and Lycia region of Turkey is home to some of its most well known resorts, with a spectacular coastline. Weather in this area rarely goes below 20 degrees during the 6 month season, with temperatures rising to over 40 degrees in July and August. May and September are lovely months to visit when the heat is less intense. There are extensive ruins and archaeological sites which can be explored within a short driving distance of Kalkan.
Gorgeous Kaputas Beach is a lovely sandy swimming cove nestled at the foot of a striking mountain gorge, about 10 minutes from Kalkan. This is the beach often pictured in travel brochures for Turkey, although it doesn't get as crowded as one would expect. The water is always a brilliant colour of turquoise. Umbrellas can be hired here and a few enterprising locals sell snacks and cold drinks. Dolmuses (shared minibuses) make frequent runs to this beach daily from the centre of Kalkan. Please note that there are quite a few steps that lead down to the beach, so take this into consideration if you have a walking problem.
In the opposite direction try Patara beach, which should not be missed with its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. It is a national park and home to many birds, also the breeding ground of the endangered Loggerhead turtle. The beach is an 18 kilometre-long strip of sand bordered on its ends by mountains and along its length by sand dunes and the large marshy area which once was the celebrated port of Patara.
Evidence of its former glories as the principal port for Lycia and an important Roman town can be seen at the extensive site, still not fully excavated. Here too stood the Hellenistic oracle of Apollo, thought to rival that at Delphi and a further claim of Patara's fame is as the birthplace of the fourth century St. Nicolas, the original Santa Claus.
There are many land activities for those who want to explore the beautiful area around Kalkan. Kalkan Old Town is one of the most beautiful, unspoilt locations along this Turquoise coast. The town has an attractive pebble beach and is perfect for swimming. For those interested in more active pursuits there is a range of activities including water-skiing, paragliding, scuba diving, jet-skiing, canoeing, trekking to name but a few.
The nearby town of Kas makes an interesting change and is well worth a visit to meander up little cobbled streets lined with pretty boutiques selling anything from carpets to hand made shoes and pottery. They have a market on a Friday should you miss Kalkan's on Thursday!
Why not see one of the numerous ancient Lycian sites. These make excellent day trips and many Kalkan tour agencies (such as Abi Travel) run trips to them with an English speaking guide, alternatively you could hire your own car. Around twenty major sites remain today with a vast amount of unusual funerary architecture (for which Lycia is famous) dotting the mountains and valleys surrounding Kalkan. Distances from Kalkan range from less than half an hour to about two hours driving.
Today Lycia is more famous for its enduring burial tombs that dot the coastline throughout the region. Xanthos was the capital city of Lycia the ruins of which are quite proximate to Kalkan and well worth a visit. In addition to the monuments the site itself affords spectacular views of the Xanthos valley and the Taurus mountains. Not far from Patara is Letoon which although not a Lycian city was its spiritual heart. The remains of the three temples each dedicated to one of their three deities take centre stage at the site. Kekova where the ancient sunken city can be seen is well worth a trip.
Saklikent Gorge - The longest canyon in Turkey - Truly gorgeous!
Green Lake - Emerald green with mountain nomads living on its shores, high in the Taurus Mountains.
Elmali - A very old traditional Ottoman town in the Taurus mountain highlands, site of ancient and prehistoric settlements. See Turkish life much like it was 100 years ago.
Closer to home, why not drive up to Islamlar in the hills behind Kalkan and have a meal of fresh fish at one of the trout farms there - truly delicious!
There are several beach clubs in Kalkan - either in the harbour or a short ferry boat ride across the bay, where sunloungers are available, drinks and snacks and where you can hire jet-skis or try water skiing.

"The best holiday - ever!"
What a fabulous villa and location - stunning views, wonderfully comfortable sunbeds, a very pretty and clean pool, and a very attractive pool surround and outside dining area.
The villa itself is tastefully decorated, comfortable with all the mod cons expected in a villa of this class - even the DVD's were brilliant! Oh and a never ending ice cold water dispenser!

"Comfortable homely base for a Kalkan holiday."
We spent 2 weeks in Villa Susanna and had an excellent holiday. Villa Susanna is in our favourite part of Kalkan - a short easy downhill walk in to town. The walk back is uphill (not steep) but if you prefer there are plenty of cheap taxis. The villa has everything we needed and is cleaned twice a week (bins emptied daily). The aircon kept us cool when the soaring temperatures got too much! The pool is great for cooling down too and the poolside area is good for relaxing with a book. We used the BBQ a few times in the evenings and sat outside to eat round the outside table. The kitchen has all the modcons we needed - cooker, m/w, washer, fridge/freezer. The wifi worked well and we were able to listen to music. There is a TV, CD and DVD player but we didn't use them. Great holiday in a great setting. We will definitely be returning!
