Our "Sunset" apartment is on the first floor with a good-sized balcony at the rear of the block, away from the impressive shared swimming pool, which is surrounded by sun terraces with allocated sun-loungers and parasols... if the poolside and sun terrace get too hot, you can always bring a parasol up from the pool area, sit in the shade of the olive tree or cool off in the air-conditioned apartment!
There is a supermarket almost next door for essential provisions and a patisserie just over the road for fresh breakfast rolls and pastries etc, together with a pharmacy and a doctor's surgery within a couple of minutes; the nearest restaurant is also within two minutes' walk. Kalkan old town is just a five minute walk down a gentle slope.
You can work off any excesses at the gym behind the supermarket (fully air-conditioned, of course) and then take a luxurious Turkish bath, all in the same complex. Perfect relaxation, all within a minute's walk.
As we mentioned earlier, location was at the very top of our list when we were looking for our apartments in Kalkan!
The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
At the centre of the Lycian region, Kalkan is well placed for visiting many historical sites such as Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos, Patara, Kekova (the Sunken City), Demre, Myra, Phaselis, Olympos, Aspendos and the Saklikent Gorge.
Kalkan is friendly, warm and charming, with an assortment of cosmopolitan restaurants and bars, many with rooftop terraces and superb views, crammed between boutiques and shops in amongst the cobbled streets. The locals are very welcoming and the whole town has a unique feel that attracts visitors back year after year. Most holidaymakers you meet in Kalkan have either been before... or, if it is their first time, they vow to return soon!
Kalkan is relatively quiet by day - most holidaymakers choose either to relax by the pool, or go to one of the many beach clubs; maybe take a boat trip, or go sightseeing, or just browse the many shops and boutiques in the cobbled streets. All very relaxed! However, the town and harbour area come to life after sundown, when the bars and restaurants (we believe there are over 100, but who's counting?) open up and offer their hospitality.
The food here is legendary; always of a high standard - thanks to the healthy competition - and the menus are extremely varied, from traditional Turkish recipes to international high cuisine; using fresh local produce and always prepared with tender loving care. These guys are very proud of what they do, and they do it very well!
We've never yet met anyone who doesn't love the place.
In the year 400 BC, Herodotus said of Kalkan: “It is the closest place to the stars on Earth” and, according to rumour, one who drinks from Kalkan Spring can never leave…we don’t actually know if the Spring still exists, but it is easy to see why the rumour has persisted. One visit and you are hooked!

"Clean, spacious apartment in a great location."
Perfectly located apartment just a 5 minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Kalkan harbour with a good sized pool shared by only 5 other apartments. It was kitted out with everything we needed to enjoy our holiday. The balcony provided a romantic setting on the nights we chose to cook ourselves with fresh produce from the local grocer and butcher. The apartment was cleaned regularly and Martyn and Fiona were lovely welcoming hosts. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks guys - it was a pleasure having you here. You are always welcome back!

"An enjoyable, relaxing holiday."
This was our second visit to Kalkan and we have booked to return again July 2011. Previously we stayed in a nearby hotel. However we much preferred the freedom of self catering accommodation. Kalkan Secrets was everything it says on its website. We stayed in Sunset appartments; there were four of us (all adults) so we filled the appartment to capacity! The appartment had everything we needed, was cleaned daily and the large balcony was marvellous especially when used for breakfast, lunch and a gin and tonic in the evening! There are several well stocked supermarkets within minutes away, other food shops such as green grocers for fruit and veg so self catering was very easy. Most evenings we ventured further afield to the many restaurants situated down the hill in the centre of Kalkan and ate in a different restaurant every evening. The climb back up the hill afterwards was sometimes very hardgoing and as it was August VERY hot! We mostly stayed by the swimming during the day which was usually very quiet and it was great not to have to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve a sunbed! The nearby beaches and places of interest are also easy to get to due to the nearby bus station and many taxes. All in all a great holiday, did not want to return home and looking forward to returning again soon.
Thank you so much for your lovely review... it's nice to know we are getting it right ;-)
