The Crete region
Welcome to beautiful Crete and Hania, a heavenly and pure land brimming with natural beauty, history, memory and culture. Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. It is a land whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights.
It is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plains, thickly covered with olive and citrus trees.
Ancient Aptera :
The site of Aptera is approximately 1.5 km uphill from the village square in Aptera and signposted. Founded by the Mycenaens and developed by the Dorians, Aptera was an important city in the classical and Roman periods, and settled up to the Byzantine era. The remains of a temple, Roman cisterns, theatre and assorted buildings lie scattered among the vegetation. The marvellous three chambered well to the north of the monastery is more gratifying. The monastery of St John of Patmos has a small chapel and ruined houses remaining within the walls. Excavations over the last two seasons have revealed a complex of private and public Roman baths clearly associated with the vaulted systems. All these buildings have been partially rebuilt. At the western entrance along the ancient road leading to the city, tombs and the bases of statues have been found.
A wonderful seaside village, retaining the pace of the local lifestyle. The White Mountains dominate the area behind it and provide a dramatic backdrop that contrasts the sandy beaches. There are two beaches, one very long and sandy with a beach-taverna, that rarely gets crowded: the other one, 1 km away, is at the edge of the central village andhas a small harbour. Here, another great selection of tavernas by the seafront, offer excellent meals.
Three beaches are strung together around the bay, one of stones, one small but sheltered strip of sand, and the main beach which is very sandy and somewhat larger. Taverna tables sit directly over the beach along one stretch. The remaining beach enjoys modern facilities which include sunbeds, showers and a toilet block. At the far end of the main beach is a small harbour recently rebuilt. Here is to be found the best sand and the safest bathing .
The second city of Crete, Chania old town is an archaeological wonderland with a unique combination of buildings - Venetian, Turkish as well as Cretan. There are two harbours which are packed with restaurants & shops. You can take a boat trip, visit the nautical museum, or just wander around the narrow back streets. The Agora & Saturday street market have the best fish, meat, fruit, vegetables - & don't miss "leather alley"
There are wonderful walks in this lush area, including the Diktamos Gorge and several other countryside walks through orange and lemon groves by the sides of rivers Xidas and Koiliaris. Extending several kilometers inland it is rich in olive and citrus groves, pasture lands and tiny hamlets rarely visited by tourists. In the spring-time, the fields, groves and tracks are filled in endless varieties of flora including many species which are endemic to Crete. Birdwatchers will find a large number of local as well as migratory birds to see, ranging from tiny warblers to large buzzards, eagles and hawks. Kournas freshwater-lake, is nearby and offers a nature's reserve rich in wild flowers, herbs and birds.
