The Ionian Islands region

The Ionian island of Corfu, known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ due to its lush green countryside and crystal clear coves, holds many unexpected and unforgettable surprises where you will discover the legendary friendliness of the locals that will undoubtedly make your stay on the island a memorable experience.

Kalami

The village of Vlachatika perched above the bay of Kalami is reached by a single track road off the main coast road just past Dimitris Taverna. Occasionally you may meet some of the locals as they wander back up the pathways to their houses shouting greetings to one another, a real chance to live amongst the Greek people and to experience the essence of traditional Greek village life.

Kalami itself is without doubt one of the most picturesque bays on the island of Corfu. It is famous for once having been the home of the writer Lawrence Durrell who stayed at the White House on the beach front. It is only a 2 minute drive or 10 minutes walk away and can be reached via the road or via several pathways off the main coastal road. It has a pretty shingle beach and its waters are lovely and clear making it perfect for snorkellers and swimmers as well as those who enjoy lazing on the beach, you can also find watersports down in the bay. The resort has several waterfront taverna´s where you can dine day and night serving fine Greek cuisine and fresh fish daily. You will also find 3 supermarkets, 3 bars and tourist offices where you can arrange excursions, an exchange, car hire and boat hire etc.

There are also many other fabulous waterside taverna´s nearby in the neighbouring picture postcard bays of Agni, Koloura and San Stephanos. Should you wish to venture a little further Kassiopi is only 10 minutes drive away and has many more shops, restaurants, bars/clubs, beaches, and a pretty harbour area if you feel the need for something a bit livelier.

There are 2 Aquaparks within easy reach on the island and a golf course just outside Corfu Town, you can also arrange horseriding with our friend Dimitri from the nearby taverna and scuba diving plus windsurfing is available in Kassiopi.

There are many things to do in Corfu but for sight seeing Corfu Town is not to be missed. It is a wonderful place to visit having plenty to see and do with its Italianate arcades, Venetian fortress and cobbled alleys. It boasts everything from international boutiques to traditional craft shops that line the streets and stay open late into the evening. Aside from shopping you can watch an afternoon of cricket sipping coffee from below the arches of the Liston Arcade or stroll around the square and admire the medieval churches and forts. That is not to mention the Corfu Trail (see www.corfutrail.org) for those who would like to see the island on foot or the monastery at Paleokastritska and many other attractions on the island.

The Corfu Trail

Walking – those who love walking will love Kalami as there are many paths that wind up through lush countryside, olive, lemon and orange trees, linking each bay along the coast treading in the footsteps of the Durrell brothers, Corfu at its best. There is also The Corfu Trail, a long-distance footpath which runs the length of the island, from its southernmost tip to its northernmost point fully waymarked in both directions. It meanders through all the island's rural municipalities and avoids heavily developed areas to the island's beauty spots, beaches, picturesque villages, monuments, monasteries and diverse landscapes. The official Corfu Trail Guide Book is available at various locations along the trail as well as several bookshops. You can find out more at their official website www.corfutrail.org

Avlaki Sailing School

The local sailing centre is located at Avlaki bay between San Stephanos and the resort of Kassiopi, the sweeping picturesque bay with its crystal clear waters has the ideal sailing conditions giving a feeling of security within its protective headlands on either side www.corfu-sailing-events.com

Scuba Diving

There is a fantastic dive centre located in the centre of Kassiopi which has a range of options available including instruction for beginners, qualifications, pool training and day and night dives. Corfu Divers also offer Deep-Sea Fishing excursions

Horse Riding

Horse riding can be arranged in advance or during your stay with our friend Dimitri from Dimitris Taverna who runs a small friendly riding stables also in nearby Avlaki. Spend a beautiful morning surrounded by nature, with animals that you love, experiencing a unique journey on a horse in unspoilt forests with a view that will astound you journeying to a remote beach normally difficult to reach.

There is also an excellent Golf course about a 30 minute drive from the property having outstanding panoramic views.

"Not a big fan of re-visiting the same place twice but have now changed my mind"

First time to Corfu, have been to other Greek islands but this was by far the best. The sea is warm, the scenery is amazing and the villa made this a perfect holiday. Stayed end of June 12 and would definitely go back. Have never seen such an amazing view before from any apartment or villa we have stayed in. Heading up to the third floor terrace for a bar-b-q at the end of the day was brilliant, watching the sun go down whilst overlooking that view, well I could have done it every night!

Villa is spacious, well equipped and very clean. The pool is slightly smaller than normal but is ideal for a small party, kids included. The pool was warm all week and the jacuzzi part was nice at the end of the day to relax and take in that view!! I travelled with my partner, my sister and her boyfriend. We are all early 30's and would say this villa and location would be ideal for anyone. It is 100% essential that you rent a car as it's a very rural part of the island and there are not really any buses to get anywhere.

The only downside to the villa is it's a good 15 minute walk into the village, where you will find a few tavernas, bars and supermarkets. For a nice meal out try Thomas's place' .. It's a little taverna on the beach, is very well priced and the service is fab! It's also very, very down hill on the way down and very steep coming back but not that bad. Having said that we would rather have been further up the hill and have the view we did all week!!!

The cleaning lady was in every other day and worked her socks off! We had fresh linen each time and she left the place spotless. All rooms have air-con,which was brilliant as it does get hot as you can imagine.

Tips:
- hire a car
- take plenty of mossie spray
- do a big shop at the supermarkets in Corfu town on the way to villa, as all supermarkets locally are small.
- have a night in kassiopi, it's 15 euro each way and is full of some good bars and restaurants
- take a boat out for the day- Kalami has a couple of local firms where you can hire, you're looking at about 75 euro for the whole day

Overall it was a great holiday, the pink house was great and we are already talking about going back!
