Villa Dionysia is considered to be one of the best renovation projects around the Old Town of Chania, as it was described by people walking by, including students from the Architectural Department of the University of Crete.

The house was purchased in 2007, and due to its location and the history behind it had to obtain a great number of permits from both the Archaeological Department and the Building Authorities of Chania before renovations could begin, so the renovation of the villa started only in October 2008 and it took place in three different stages, with last and largest one starting in March 2010. During the renovation, we replaced almost everything in the house, but we kept its historic and traditional character and tried to match it with some modern features and facilities such as the roof garden. The old flat terrace had not been used much in the past and it wasn’t until we climbed up there and saw how beautiful the views were, so we decided to make the most from it. Now, one can have panoramic views to the Venetian Harbour; the White Mountains and across the Old Town of Chania.

Internally the house looks incredible. The plan was to show all the old stone features, including all old stone window sills; all the stone work around all doors and windows as well as new and old arches. The internal north side stone wall of the building remains at its original state. All these stone works are accompanied by real oak wooden floors in the 3 bedrooms and the living room; travertine/marble bathrooms, limestone floors in the kitchen and the lounge areas; fine-looking custom made oak kitchen and wardrobes as well as cast iron hand made staircase and light fittings. The terrace with the spectacular views to the harbour and across the old Turkish Quarter and Saint Nicholas church are covered with limestone; and have a sitting/sunbathing area for relaxation surrounded by mature trees; jasmine and bougainvillea. Due to its location (on three corners) the villa has light and fresh air from three sides.

The ground floor consists of one bathroom and a storage area; the first floor consists of the master bedroom and the master bathroom; the second bedroom and a sitting area, and the second floor consists of the third bedroom, and the open-plan lounge, living area and kitchen. It also has access to the roof terrace with glass-roof entrance.

The master bedroom will has a king size bed; a large vanity unit; oak wardrobes and bed-side cabinets, whereas the second bedroom, which used to be the old kitchen has a double bed; a large vanity unit, which used to be the old stone baking oven; oak wardrobes and bed-side cabinets. Finally, the third bedroom has two single beds; wardrobes and a bed side cabinet between the two beds. All bedrooms have wi-fi internet, satellite TVs; A/C units; electric heaters and beddings.

In the living room the villa has a large plasma satellite TV; an iPod docking system; DVD player; A/C; electric heater and a gas stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, coffee-maker, dish-washer, washing machine and a big fridge-freezer.

All bathrooms are fully equipped with a shower (in both rooms), and a bathtub in the master bathroom. In both bath rooms we have electric heated towel rails.

The roof terrace is furnished with sun-beds, settees and a dining table with chairs.

Parking is also available in the small square next to the house.

The villa is within a very short walking distance to the port as well as three small sandy beaches in the Koum Kapi area (east of the Venetian Harbour) and about fifteen minutes’ walk to the beach at Nea Hora, which has a fantastic marina (west of the Venetian Harbour).

The Ionian Islands region

The Crete region

Crete is the largest and most beautiful of all the Mediterranean islands. It has an unspoilt tranquillity with a gentle temperate climate and year long sunshine.

The history of Crete stretches back many centuries to the very beginnings of modern western civilisation. Over the years it was coveted and conquered by the Romans, the Ottoman Turks and the Venetians. All drawn by the island’s strategic location, natural resources and immense beauty.

The landscape and scenery is uniquely diverse – the majestic snow capped White Mountains, the thriving ecology of Lake Kournas, the awesome natural splendour of the great Samaria Gorge. And, of course, the endless sands of the Blue Flag beach of Georgioupolis, which is the longest in Europe.

Amongst other things, the many great attractions of Crete include 310 days of annual sunshine and the cleanest waters in the Med. The Cretan people are warm and hospitable – and perhaps not surprisingly, enjoy the longest life expectancy in Europe.

The island itself measures some 260 kms by 56 kms, and it has a relatively small population of around 600, 000 – so it’s far from crowded. The currency is the Euro and the language Greek, though English is widely spoken.

Kalamaki

Chania was the capital of Crete until 1972, and many still believe it to be one of the prettiest towns in Greece. Reminders of its Byzantine past abound, and the town successfully combines its ancient history with vibrant modern life, including a wealth of fascinating shops of every description.

From traditional knife makers to Leather Lane, from designer furniture to the fresh fish market - Chania has it all! In addition to the best shopping in Crete, Chania also offers a first class choice of restaurants to suit every taste, plus a buzzing nightlife.

No visit to Chania would be complete without exploring the picturesque harbour area and admiring the many hauntingly beautiful old buildings of Venetian and Turkish design, all blending together in perfect harmony to create an unforgettable picture. Return in the evening, and there is change of pace and atmosphere. Live music bars, sophisticated clubs and laid-back tavernas.

Chania celebrates a full programme of special occasions throughout the year, starting with the annual New Year fireworks. And in addition to a whole calendar of feast days, there are weekly summer festivals. Whether these are promoting local food and wine or celebrating the local arts and culture, they are enjoyed by visitors and townsfolk alike. Day or night, summer or winter, Chania is always alive and has much to tempt visitors to spend at least one day of their precious time away from the beach.
