The Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region

Located in a small valley, on the shore of a beautiful 4km-long lake, Jugon-les-Lacs is like an oasis in the middle of an ocean of greenery. Its architectural heritage, granite mansions and central square, testify to the proud history of Jugon, which used to be a fortified town in the Penthièvre (area around Lamballe) at the time of the Dukes of Brittany. There are 2 lakes - Lac de Jugon to the south of the village and Lac de l'Arguenon to the north.
Don't miss out the castle of the Hunaudaye, in Plédéliac, set in a place steeped in history. Built in the XIII th century on a site that had been occupied since the IVth, it towers on a strategic spot from where it was possible to keep watch over the frontier between the Pays de Lamballe and the Pays de Dinan, that were in conflict at the time. The abbey of Boquen dates back to the XIIth century, and it lies close to the antique Roman way that once linked Vannes to Corseul.
Situated only 20 minutes from the historic medieval town of Dinan, this is a must for a day out with its well preserved castle, quaint streets and buildings. The famous Rue Jerzual is a very steep narrow lane down to the old port of Dinan but the way back is not for the faint-hearted!! It has a very large market here in the middle of the town on a Thursday morning.
St Malo, is not just a port but a beautiful town in its own right, the walled city, was heavily bombed during the second world war, but has been wonderfully restored and is full of sights, good restaurants and shops. There is also a very good aquarium which is worth a visit.
Mont St Michel is a stunning place to visit only 1 hour's drive from the house. It is built out into the bay and the town is topped by an amazing abbey, the spires of which can be seen inland for miles. The tidal ranges are world famous and it is said the incoming tide can beat a galloping horse! Market days vary, there is a small market in the village on a Friday morning, although Dinan on Thursday mornings and Dinard on Saturday morning are probably the largest and well worth a visit to buy typical Breton presents and souvenirs.
The Jugon les Lacs area
For a relaxing and peaceful holiday it is ideal and is within easy distance of wonderful sights, beaches and many other amenities.
There are various festivals in and around Jugon les Lacs throughout the year. Amongst the many in the summer, the Festilacs on Friday evenings includes free entertainment in the Place du Martray, with food and drink available.
A large flea-market-cum-car boot sale takes place on the first Sunday in September. Autumn colours are beautiful in the surrounding countryside, and nearby festivals celebrate chestnut harvest, mushroom collecting, and cider making
The town website has a lot of useful information on activities:
The 70 hectare huge lake, fed by several rivers, provides great opportunities for all kinds of water sport activities. Anglers will enjoy the numerous spots well-stocked with fish, whether it be in the Grand Etang or in the basin of Arguenon: carp, trout, zander and pike are regularly rising to the bait. The region, that once was the county of Penthièvre, is a paradise for open air activities, and particularly for hiking. The GR (long distance trail) of Penthièvre leads you around a great number of sites well worth a visit.
Cyclists will find a haven here: as well as the excellent road network, Jugon les Lacs is an accredited all-terrain biking centre, with bikes for hire, and a range of route maps available.
There are many golf courses within a short drive including a French open championship course at Val St Andre. Below are details of some of the best courses in Brittany, all of which are within an hour from the house.
1. Golf and Country Club de St Malo at Le Tronchet (18 holes, par 72, 6,593 yards; nine holes, par 36, 2,885 yards) - The main course, surrounding Mirloup lake and bordering the forest of Mesnil, is the largest in Brittany, rightly claiming to be among the finest of newgeneration courses in France.
The nine-hole course also runs through the ancient hunting grounds of the forest and echoes the history of the lovely converted 18th Century manor house which is now the clubhouse with 30 bedrooms and two restaurants.
Another attraction of St Malo is that there are 11 other golf courses within an hour's drive.
2. Golf Club des Ormes at Dol de Bretagne, between St Malo and Rennes (par 72, 6,344 yards) - This magnificent, mature course is in the grounds of a 16th Century chateau, set in wooded parkland bordering natural lakes.
Des Ormes has hosted a number of major championships and is noted for its lush, tree-lined fairways. On the course, watch out for the historic watchtower and the ruins of medieval estate buildings. The clubhouse was once the manor farm.
3. Dinard Golf Club at St Briac sur Mer (par 68, 5,729 yards) - The second oldest course in France, formed in 1887, these links are jawdropping in their coastal beauty. In places, the course is reminiscent of Turnberry.
Six of Dinard's holes overlook the sea. The word 'stunning' is overworked but it really does apply here. The clifftop parts of the course provide memories you will take home with a smile on your face.
4. Pleneuf, Le Val-Andre (par 72, 6,361 yards)
On the edge of the Emerald Coast, this modern links/parkland course is regularly rated one of the best in France and is an excellent combination of soaring clifftop golf - particularly the famous 11th, 200ft above the fairway that runs along the coast - and pretty holes that blend into the countryside.
There are also several good equestrian centres which arrange lessons and treks.
It is only a 30 minute drive to reach the glorious sandy beaches on the coast or you can take a swim in the well equipped swimming pool complex in Jugon (10 minutes walk from the house). The swimming pool is open every week-end and bank holidays from May 1st, from 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm. July and August: Open every day from 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm. (Except on the 2nd and 3rd of July: open from 4.30 to 7.00 pm)
