BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Charente-Maritime is located on the Atlantic coast of western France , in the Poitou-Charentes region. The department extends from just north of La Rochelle to the Gironde estuary (north of Bordeaux) to the south.
The Charente-Maritime perhaps represents the transition zone from northern France to southern France. in part the department has a very warm micro-climate with a great deal of sunshine, and warmer conditions than you would expect.
The countryside is largely flat, small scale agricultural - sunflowers, maize etc - interspersed with small woodlands. The highlight of the department is undoubtedly the port town of La Rochelle, a lovely and interesting small city with lots to enjoy and discover.
Heading south along the coastal region, the ramparts at Brouage, and Royan and the village of Talmont are popular resorts and attractions. The beach resorts of mainland Charente-Maritime are not always exceptional, but there are treasures to be found - try La Palmyre north of Royan (visit the zoo while you are there) for example.Towards the south, see the interesting Meschers-sur-Gironde on the Gironde estuary near Talmont, above all for the interesting coastal troglodyte dwellings set in the cliffs.
Heading inland a little within the Charente-Maritime there are some treasures to discover. To the north the Marais-Poitevin region of marshes and canals deserves exploration - take a boat trip for the best way to appreciate the unusual environment. Some of the inland towns with interesting historical sights include Marans and Surgeres and, heading further south, Rochefort and Saintes.
The Jonzac / Champagnac area
With it’s many bars and restaurants, the charming town of Jonzac enjoys many other facilities to include casino, water park (Les Antilles) with indoor and outdoor beaches, slides, wave machines etc.
The Gironde estuary is situated within 30 minutes drive whilst the beaches of Royan are within about 45 mins.
There are a number of golf courses close by - to include Cognac (approx 35 mins), Saintes (approx 40 min) and Royan (approx 1 hour). There is also a 9 hole course at Montendre (about 15 mins drive).

Despite what must have been a terrifying idea (twenty guys coming for a 5-day stag do), Richard and Lesley managed to make us feel utterly at home in their magical gites. Perfectly presented, comfortable, well stocked with firewood and charcoal for the BBQ and fireplaces, I honestly cannot think of ways in which this could have been better. Apart from me calling Lesley "Lesley" rather than "Lee" all weekend. Sorry! |

I booked this accomodation for myself and 19 other male friends for a gents getaway. We are all working professionals and have high standards when it comes to accomodation. When I initially looked the pictures looked great but I questioned how good it was going to be... I needn't of bothered. The owners Lesley and Richard from the moment we arrived were so accomodation and the properties are fantastic. I had forgotton there is a water mill that runs through the house. There is a beautiful stream and an area to kick a ball around inbetween the two pools. One is heating btw and perfect for relaxing around with ample sun-loungers. The living room and dining room is amazing and the petit etournau is to die for throughout with its own private area. The kitchens had everything we needed and there is so much space in the main house it is easy to find some quiet area to yourself if need be. I honestly cannot of imagined we'd of got a better property in this size for the price we paid - esp just an hour from Bordeaux. Lesly and Richard were great to us all and helped us with any questions we needed answering. Thoroughly recommended!! |
