The Antigua region
If you’ve never visited Antigua there are delights galore in store for you. The warmth of the people of Antigua equals the warmth of the sun that shines most of the time. When it does rain it’s called ‘liquid sunshine’. Antigua enjoys near perfect year round subtropical weather and is one of the driest islands in the Caribbean. Average annual temperature is 79F (26C) – Jan and Feb being 77F(25C) and August 82F (27C). The hurricane season lasts from June to November with September the busiest time for storms. However, statistically only four hurricanes hit the islands every 100 years.
The history of the island is alive and evident everywhere and you will find much to occupy your time exploring historic sites and attractions – unless you are intent on lying on the beach every day soaking up the sun. These are the finest beaches in the Caribbean of course and offer world class diving and sailing with a wealth of other water sports.
The island measures 15 miles east to west and 11 miles north to south. It covers 108 square miles and is the largest of the Leeward Islands. Nature lovers will delight in luxuriant flora abundant everywhere.
Jolly Harbour / Hamilton Estate area
Its just a ten minute stroll to Jolly Beach and the local harbour where there is a large supermarket which caters for most needs. Jolly Harbour also offers a variety of restaurants & bars, a casino, shopping & excursions, an 18 hole golf course, water sports, boat hire, tennis, squash & gym.
Still conveniently local you will find world class dining, and a choice of lively beach restaurants.
International Cricket Week (cricket is Antigua’s national sport and there is fierce devotion to this sport) Featuring the WI against visiting teams. Antigua has produced world class cricketers the likes of Viv Richards, Richie Richardson, Curtley Ambrose and Andy Roberts.
Tennis Week – in May and attracts top name seeds from around the world
Yacht Regatta – attracts yachts from around the world and this is held the week before the Antigua Sailing Week.
Sailing Week takes place at the end of April and attracts entries from around the world for racing – non stop festivities at this time.
Carnival – takes place the first Monday and Tuesday in August and is a vibrant summer festivity.
