The Scottish Borders region

The Scottish Borders is renowned for its cashmere, tartan and knitwear. In Hawick there is a cashmere centre and many privately owned knitwear shops and at nearby Selkirk is the Locharron visitor centre and mill. Jedburgh boasts a woollen mill with a service that will trace family tartans, a golf shop and a fine whisky department.

One hour's drive east will take you to the coast where there are quiet sandy beaches and interesting villages. St Abbs Head is famous for its bird reserve and Holy Island for its historic past and ruined abbey. Eyemouth is still a fishing village and Bamburgh has a spectacular castle right on the sea edge.

A trip in the other direction will take you to the pine forests of Kielder with the largest man- made lake in the country. The Borders is an area of quiet roads and plenty of parking

North of Kielder is beautiful countryside , St Mary's loch and The Grey Mare's Tail waterfall are a must for anyvisitor to the region

The Royal Burgh of Jedburgh dates from Roman times and is rich in history with interesting places to visit such as Jedburgh Abbey, Queen Mary's House and the Castle Jail. The surrounding towns of Melrose, Hawick, Galashiels and Kelso have a variety of ancestral homes including Abbotsford, Mellerstain, Floors Castle and Traquair and throughout the Borders there are historical sites, abbeys, grand houses, shops and beautiful gardens to visit.

Jedburgh and the surrounding towns have award-winning restaurants, tearooms and speciality food shops selling local produce. The well-known Baxters food company has a visitor centre at Selkirk and there are privately owned specialist food shops such as The Teviot Smokery . Most Border towns still have private butcher shops where locally sourced meat and prepared dishes are sold.

If you're looking for something sporting or of an energetic nature, the choices include swimming and fitness centre, fishing, cycling, walking, horse riding and golf.

For golfers the region has a variety of course including a championship level course and in total there are 21 courses in the region all participating in the 'Freedom of the Fairways' passport scheme which offers reduced rates

The Borders is renowned for its spectacular scenery and for cyclists the purpose built Abbey's Way provides a unique experience, as does the 7 Stanes mountain biking centres. These 7 centres cater for all levels of expertise with trails running through the forests and expert tuition at hand.

Walkers can enjoy the Pennine Way, Abbeys Way or the St Cuthbert Way as well as many short (signposted) walks through beautiful countryside.

For wildlife enthusiasts there is a salmon leap at Selkirk, an osprey nest at Peebles and bird sanctuaries at St Abbs Head and the Farne Islands as well as lots of local wildlife.

For families the Jedburgh Deer Park makes an interesting day out with rare breeds sheep, pigs, poultry and deer. The tame animals like to be petted and fed and there is an adventure playground for children. The resident birds of prey give flying displays and there are long woodland walks.
