The Valenciana region

The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

Alicante is a costal province in Eastern Spain, in the southern part of the Community of Valencia. It borders the provinces of Murcia (S-W), Albacete (W), Valencia (N) and the Mediterranean Sea (E). The province is mountainous, specially to the north and west, whereas it is mostly flat to the south.

Alicante ranks as the 5th most populous province in Spain, with 1,825,264 inhabitants, from which at least 350,000 (20%) are foreign.

Xàbia (Spanish: Jávea) is a lovely coastal town, half way between the cities of Valencia and Alicante.

Javea is also known as Spain's Sunrise, as it is the most easterly town on the Spanish mainland and the first point on the mainland where the sun can be seen rising.

Situated behind a wide bay and sheltered between two rocky headlands, the town has become a very popular small seaside resort and market town.

Orange, Lemon, Almond and Olive trees are everywhere to be seen in this fertile area. The Natural Park of Montgo with its 753 m Montgo Peak is one of Javea's beauty spots and is the second-highest peak so close to the sea in the whole Mediterranean, from where the island of Ibiza can be seen on clear days.

Javea is protected from harsh winter winds of the north by the mountain and enjoys a unique micro-climate that the World Health Organisation named as one of the healthiest in the world. There are more recorded hours of sunshine per year in Javea than in any other place in Spain, making it a popular destination for Northern Europeans and the Spanish alike during the cold winter months.

Javea

With around 320 days of sunshine each year the Javea area has a very appealing climate. Classified as 'near perfect' by the World Health Organisation the microclimate has proven very beneficial to many people with ailments. Javea, with it's three parts, the Casco Urbano (Old Town), Port and Arenal has something for everybody. The locals call it ' Amanecer de Espana, the ' dawn of Spain' because it occupies the most easterly point overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Javea is a working Port and is where people from many parts of northern Europe come to make their home. Javea's history includes the defeat of the Moors by King Jaime in 1244 and San Bartolome Church has an inner wall dating from this time. Javea has many fiestas starting with Los Reyes ( Three Kings) on the night of 5th January , through the Hogueras de San Juan in June, the Moors and Christians in July and the Port Fiesta in September. Besides these main fiestas a number of others take place and if you are here in Javea in the Summer months you will almost certainly see part of one of our fiestas.

Several times a year Javea lets its hair down with a lively fiesta, as do the surrounding villages of Gata de Gorgos, Jesus Pobre and Benitachell. There are three main fiestas: the Fogueres de San Juan (June), the Moros y Cristianos (July) parades, and the Nuestra Señora de Loreto (September) with the bull-running on the harbour walls and a firework display.

The best known, and most enjoyed by visitors, is the July fiesta of 'Moors and Christians' celebration, when locals re-enact the Moorish landings on the coast and the recapture of the peninsula by Christian defenders. During the second half of July the town is enveloped in an orgy of feasting, street parades, dancing, music and fireworks.

Since the 1970s Jávea / Xàbia has become a popular place for northern European holiday makers to rent villas and apartments and for affluent expatriates to purchase retirement villas. Whilst the old town of Javea is still predominantly Spanish, the new town is also a very popular holiday destination for Spanish tourists in August and for long weekends at other times of the year.

The town can be split into three distinct areas: the Old Town, the Port and the Arenal beach area.

The Old Town with the impressive Church of Sant Bartolomé dating back to the late 14th century and it's cobbled streets, has a regular marked day on Thursday, and a good selection of quality restaurants and bars.

There is also a historical and ethnographical museum ("Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B. Soler Blasco Javea") and an established art gallery in the old town, Atelier 1 with regular art exhibitions are held in the gallery at the town's library.

The Port is a favourite with tourists with a range of restaurants situated side-by-side along the seafront, safe gravel beaches, pretty promenades, fresh fish market and a classy marina. The landmark, and well worth a look, is the church of Nuestra Señora del Loreto, built in 1967 to represent the heart and feelings of Xàbia's fishing quarter. Looking more like a water reservoir than a church, it was built to resemble a fishing vessel bursting through the waves.

Between the Port and the Arenal beach, and within walking distance of the Port area, is a long stretch of seafront where parking is easy and free and where local people go for walks or fish from the rocks in the lower seasons. In this same spot, but with parking somewhat more challenging at the time, a number of temporary, yet chique and welcoming busy beach bars are set up to attract and supply food and drink to those who enjoy the views and sounds of this relaxed yet buzzing and elegant feature of Javea's mid and high season offering.

The Arenal beach area has a wide arc of a white sandy beach, flanked by a promenade of shops, bars, restaurants and fast food diners. During the summer evenings there are a number of stalls selling handmade crafts. Many of the bars offer live music and one can party away until the very early hours. Accomplished 'sand artists' work along the Arenal beach during the summer months as well as a wide range of street entertainers.

The Montgo Mountain is itself an experience for those who enjoy fresh air, exercise and beautiful nature. There a wonderful walks and views to be enjoyed both from this mountain park and from the mountain ranges a short car journey away.

A large range of sports and hobby activities are catered for in and around Javea, including hill and mountain walks, cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse-riding, mountain-biking, photography, bowls, sailing, trekking; there are many shops & rental centres that serve these pursuits

"Relaxing house."

Great house located in a quiet area. Nice view of sunsets. 4 of 5 bedrooms with separate AC which we were very happy to have. Great hiking in the area by the house. Closest beach La Granadella is fine for snorkeling. Arenal is 6 km away was a great sandy beach. We tried the restaurant La Guardia which is 1 km away and thought it was excellent.
