Geographical description
Jávea’s municipal area is crescent-shaped, with the points being the Cabo de San Antonio and Cabo de la Nao. It has an area of 68.4 sq km.
Its coordinates are 38º 47' 40'' North and 0º 9' 90'' East.
Jávea-Xàbia’s coast is varied and covers a length of 25 km.
In general, the land in the area is very uneven. The flat areas are composed of alluvial deposits, fertile land which is suitable for growing grapes, almonds, olives and oranges. The mountainous areas are covered in extensive pine-woods.
Javea / Montgo area
Thanks to its light, its coast and its beauty, Jávea-Xàbia has captivated prestigious artists, most notably Joaquin Sorolla, Abril, Ricardo Verde and the engraver Lambert. In October 1896, Joaquin Sorolla Bastida came to Xàbia, where he fell in love with the sea and, in particular, with the spot below the Cabo de San Antonio.
Shortly after his arrival Sorolla wrote a letter to his wife, Clotilde, saying: "This is the place I've always dreamed of: Sea and Mountain, but What a Sea! We who live in Valencia cannot imagine this grandiose nature: the Cabo de San Antonio is another wonder; an immense, enormous, reddish monument. Its colour in the waters gives such purity and a brilliant pure green, a colossal emerald . . .".
Sorolla painted at least 107 pictures in Jávea, most of which are in private collections and in the Museo de Madrid. We urge you to visit the Museum, as it is like being in Jávea-Xàbia. Jávea boasts an ample calendar of festivites, ranging from Christian holidays to those of pagan origin. There are fiestas in Jávea all year round, in the main urban centres: the Old Town and the Port (Sea Customs) area.
Chronologically, the first festivity is the procession of the Three Kings on 5th January, organised by the "quintos" (young people who turn 18 that year). 20th January is San Sebastian's day, the patron saint of Jávea. The acts for this are mainly religious. In February, the "quintos" (young people who turn 18 that year) organise the Carnival as a joyous celebration before the beginning of Lent.
From 28th April to 3rd May, the festivities in honour of Jesus of Nazareth. These are the most important religious festivities in Jávea. Around 15th June the San Juan (Saint John) bonfires, fiestas with a pagan origin. In the Port, the sailors celebrate the festivity of the Virgen del Carmen on 16th July with a sailing procession and a floral offering in the middle of the bay. From 16th to 20th July, also in the Sea Customs area, Los Moros y Cristianos festivity is held.
2nd August sees the celebration in honour of the Virgen de los Angeles in the San Jeronimo Monastery. The festivities in honour of the Virgen del Loreto are held from 1st to 8th September. Various activities take place, including Bulls in the Street and a fireworks display on the port breakwater. The following Sunday is the festivity of El Popul, so named because it takes place in the Chapel of the same name. There is a Mass and sweets and chocolate are given out in the Chapel.
Santa Lucia's day is 13th December and is celebrated in the Chapel that bears her name. "Buñuelos" (sweetmeats similar to doughnuts) and mistela wine are given to those taking part.
