The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca - "The White Coast" stretches along Spain's beautiful Mediterranean coastline from Denia in the north, to Torrevieja in the south. It is served along its length by the A7/AP7 motorway, and by the N332 trunk road which threads its way through the coastal towns and villages. The climate of the Costa Blanca is exactly what you would expect from Mediterranean countries. Almost perpetual blue skies during the spring, summer and autumn, with maximum temperatures in the region of 40C, raising the sea temperature to a comfortable 25C or so. The main towns along this part of the Spanish coast are Denia with its port and ferries to the Balearics; Javea (the "Hidden Jewel") with its sandy "El Arenal" beach and numerous small coves and bays within a few minutes drive; pretty Moraira with its beaches and marina; Calpe with its high-rise apartment buildings and the famous Penon d'Ifach - a mecca for rock climbers of all levels; Benidorm with its high-rise apartment blocks and the nearby Terra Mitica theme park; Alicante, the city capital of the region, with its international airport serving more than 22 UK departure points; Torrevieja in the south with the nearby beautiful Cabo Roig, and many, many lovely beaches.
Javea / Arenal area
Javea, very much a low-rise town, has three "centres": The old town, the "Arenal" (beach), and the port. The population is around 24000 in total. THE OLD TOWN has at its centre the 12th century fortified church of San Bartolome - well worth a visit, which is next to the indoor market. It is surrounded by tiny, narrow streets of traditional close-set stone buildings. Here there is a myriad small bars and restaurants which are frewuented by tourists and locals alike. Try sitting outside at any of the Tapas bars here for a taste of the real Spain. The Soler Blasco museum, displaying treasures of Javea, is also worth a visit whilst in the old town. Moving away from this small area you find yourself in the more modern areas of the town with larger shops and flowing traffic. THE "ARENAL" is Javea's main, 'blue flag' beach which curves along the bay. Alongside its wide promenade there is a wide array of shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Standing a row or two back from the Arenal, are apartments and hotels. This is also the centre of the Javea nightlife. Moving northwards along the beach, past the Parador (one of a chain of high-quality state-owned hotels), is another long stretch of shoreline comprising rocky and pebbly areas. On the latter there are a number of beach bars, and jet-ski rental. THE PORT area is begins with the Avenida Mediterraneo, with its bars and restaurant, and the working harbour area itself. There is a freshly-caught fish market there in the afternoons. NEARBY there are many areas of naturals beauty ranging from the small bays and coves,to the headlands (Cabo San Antonio, Cabo de la Nao, Cabo San Martin), and to Javea's own mountain nature preservation area, "Montgo".
