The Costa Blanca/Valencia region
Javea old town is steeped in history, with tosca stone porticoes, gothic bay windows, wrought iron window bars and balcony railings. The church of San Bartolemé in the town centre is an example of late Gothic with a defensive character. The "Soler Blasco" Archaeological Museum is close by in the narrow streets and offers a wealth of information about the Iberian history. Nearby you can find the covered indoor market selling all sorts of household goods, fruit, vegetables, meat and fresh fish brought up from the Port daily.
Aduanas del Mar is the area generally known as the Port. The harbour where the fishing boats dock with their daily catch, lies next to the very attractive marina full of interesting boats.
The wonderful maritime architecture of the Santa Maria de Loreto church, with a roof imitating a ship’s hull must be seen, and is well worth a visit.
Pavement cafés and bars overlooking the Mediterranean invite you to sit and have a drink and just enjoy the ambience of the Port, after completing your shopping.
The beautiful, sandy bay lapped by the blue Mediterranean sea is called the Arenal beach. The beach is planted with palm trees. has sun beds and natural parasols for hire and play areas for children. The bay is fringed by the promenade with its wonderful choice of bars and restaurants offering national and international specialities.
Interesting shops and boutiques abound. In the evening the Arenal is the place for fun and a lively night-life with disco bars and nightclubs with dancing, to suit all ages. Stalls offering handmade jewellery, ceramics and a host of other items can also be found here.
Javea has one of the most attractive sea ports along the Mediterranean, due both to its location and to its unsurpassed fishing and sports installations. The modern Yacht Club at the sports marina has nearly 300 berths and facilities for all types of water sports, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing etc.
Just outside of the town, the Javea Golf Club offers a pleasant setting for golfers. There are several other golf courses within easy access of Javea. A number of sports clubs in the area promote tennis and horse-riding. Out of season mountain climbing and walking in the local mountain ranges is very popular. There are several walking groups for all levels.
Fiestas: From 28 April – 3 May, the religious Jesus of Nazareth Fiesta with candlelight parade takes place. The Javea International Festival offering music, dancing, history, culture, food and drink from various European countries, represented by the people who came from those countries to live in Javea, is held at the beginning of June.
It is followed by the main Javea Fiesta which is held during the second fortnight of June and is an occasion for feasting, dancing, parades, music and fireworks, as are the Moors & Christians parades at the end of August. The Port Fiestas honouring the Virgin of Loreto is held from 1-8 September. During the rest of the year there are other smaller fiestas for celebration.
