The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region

The Loire Valley is known as the Garden of France. The wonderful soil and the mild climate provide the perfect conditions for growing a wide range of vegetables and acres and acres of orchards. The local architecture reflects the traditional use of limestone (tuffau) and slate roofs.
The mighty river Loire is 20 minutes south and following the river East you come to the historic Loire towns of Saumur, Fontevraud, Chinon, Tours. Enjoy a plethora of chateaux and vineyards including the appellations of Saumur Champigny, Bourgeuil, Saint Nicholas de Bourgeuil, Chinon, Touraine, Vouvray. Following river West, Anjou, Brissac, Bonnezeau, Layon, Chaumes, Savennieres.
The Jarze area
Jarze is a typical provincial French village with 2 bakers, a butcher/charcuterie, tabac/presse, bar/cafe, pharmacie, post office, hairdresser and a small supermarket.
Some 15 minutes drive east is Bauge, a bustling little town with 'high street', bandstand and Chateau (now home to the tourist office). A similar distance north is Durtal on the River Loire. A pretty little town with imposing Chateau (open for visits) and the fabulous Chambiers Nature Reserve, perfect for walking and cycling whatever the season.
