The Aland region
Jämsä is a thriving provincial town beside Lake Päijänne. It offers the benefits of high quality services and a beautiful and varied rural environment. In the Middle Ages Jämsä and the neighbouring districts formed an administrative parish where hunting and fishing were the main sources of livelihood. On a bank of the River Jämsä an old Viking settlement has been discovered.
Today the centre of Jämsä together with the Kaipola sub-centre and UPM-Kymmene Industrial Park, form a continuous ribbon of built-up area along the banks of the River Jämsä. The Halli sub-centre is located in the area of Kuorevesi, the municipality incorporated into Jämsä town since 2001.In summer Lake Päijänne provides good opportunities for touring by water. From Jämsä town centre one can travel along the idyllic River Jämsä to Lake Päijänne. The Päijänne sailing race is the most important sailing competition in inland waters.
Jämsä has a flourishing cultural life. The summer theatres in the sub-region are especially active. Kivipankki (Stone Bank in English), the Jämsä sub-region's oldest bank building, has been rebuilt as a small and friendly exhibition and concert venue. More and more art and other events are also being organized in the summer by the banks of the River Jämsä.

Mairela Retreat offers an amazing opportunity to experience a holistic healing holiday in a Natural Healing Space. A holistic look at healing involves seeing the individual as a system as opposed to just a sum of its parts, with the acceptance that we are not able to see all of that system in a conventional way.
There are non-physical aspects of ourselves which play an equally important role in our overall health. Indeed all levels of being must be in balance themselves and with each other for total health to manifest. As the word holistic suggests the healing that happens at Mairela Retreat deals with the roots of dis-ease.
At Mairela Retreat the healing modalities of reiki, inner child healing, sound healing, past life regression, essence expansion, celestial healing, crystals, positive belief patterning, EFT, psychic surgery, relaxation, meditation and chi kung are all used together to create a unique healing approach that gives the best to each individual. After all, we are one but we're not the same.
How to get there
Mairela Retreat is within easy reach of Tampere airport which is serviced by low cost airline Ryan Air from Stansted and Dublin or slightly further Helsinki Vantaa airport which is serviced by Finnair, British Airways, Scandinavian Airlines and Blue1.

Further details indoors: The retreat cottage has a living room with an open fire which is very relaxing and perfect for cooking Finnish sausages after the sauna. There is plenty of cut and seasoned wood available. There is a small library of books available including fiction and health titles.
The living room has a dining table with views out towards the lake, as well as fireside chairs and a three seater.
The bedroom has a double bed with a small gallery above which has two single mattresses. I always say that the cabin sleeps two comfortably.
The kitchen has a refridgerator, an electric cooker, juicer, coffee maker, microwave and a sink. Cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, towels and linen are provided. Please note that there is no running water in the cottage but fresh spring water can be collected from the well situated 20m from the cottage.
Further details outdoors: The sauna provides the washing facilities for the cottage and is down by the lake side. It has 3 rooms, a dressing room, a wash room and the actual sauna room.
The hot water is heated in the wash room and the water is collected from the lake. Both fires are wood burning and there is a plentiful supply of dry seasoned wood.
