The Zanzibar Archipelago region
Zanzibar Island is just off the east coast of Tanzania with a tropical climate making it an all year warm and sunny destination.
Arriving in Stone Town the warm fragrance of the Island is immediately sensed and the busy bustle of markets, winding alley ways,
historic buildings with heavily carved doors - the bright friendly "karibu" welcomes you.
Moving out from town travel through villages lost in time with washing lines of brightly coloured cloth, live stock and little plantations of tropical fruits and vegetables - trough the forests of palm, mango and hardwood trees, the spice farms and on to the ocean.
Lying in the Indian Ocean the island is surrounded by sheltering reefs rich in corals and sea life. The beaches are powdery white sand and fringed with palms and casuarina trees - outcrops of coral rock create unique sculptures hanging bravely over the sea in places as well as protected swimming areas and fantastic snorkeling.
A place to refresh perspective, to enjoy simplicity and timelessness, to bask in endless beauty.
Jambiani village is long and narrow running along the beach facing a beautiful tidal lagoon, protected by a coral reef. The beach is very wide at low tide offering interesting pools, shells, easy bicycle rides and endless walks. As the tide moves the colour of the ocean change in shades of turquoise and blues and offer fantastic swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing, dhow sailing and kite surfing.
Fishermen sail off in their little dhows, often with sails made of a patchwork of sugar or flour sacks and the women work their seaweed farms in brightly coloured wraps or collect shell fish for the evening meal.
The smells of cooking fires and spices fill the air at sunset while the boys have football practice on the beach and a sense of
wellbeing and simplicity prevails - Village life surrounds the house with cocks crowing, children playing and the mwazini calling the people to prayer.
