The Andalucia region
Cortijo Las Olivas sits in the heart of Andalucia in the region where Cordoba, Malaga and Granada meet and makes a fantastic base for sight seeing in there three historic areas. In Granada you have the world famous Alhambra and Generalife... an absolute must for the avid sight seer, not to mention the stunning cobbled streets and a city that oozes history and culture from every door and window.
In Cordoba, you must visit the Mosquita and in the newer city of Malaga there are endless leisure pursuits and sight seeing tours to keep both children and adults alike entertained. For all the art lovers, make sure you visit the birthplace of Picasso and his art museum.
Andalucia itself is a stunning landscape and a photographers paradise, with new sights around every corner... perfect for bird watchers and hikers... maybe take a trip to El Torcal nature reserve and see the million year old rock formations... see the ancient burial sights and churches of Antequera and of course spend a lot of time at the Aquamarine lakes of Iznajar, the second largest lake in Spain and only a 3 minute drive from Cortijo Las Olivas!! spend a day on the beach and enjoy the beach bar light refreshments!
Iznajar is a stunning white hilltop Spanish village overlooking one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever see! with a variety of banks with ATM's - village hospital cafes, restaurants and bars. There are a wide variety of shops:- butchers, fruit / veg, pharmacy, ironmongers, optician etc. The locals are extremely pleasant and helpful - you will find it like shopping in a bygone era. Food is cheap and of good quality.
Other local activities include horse riding, walking, bird watching, cycling and tennis, sailing or fishing on the lake. There are also plenty of people offering yoga, massage or drive the children to the Wolf park, Donkey sanctuary, to the water park Rute: a further ten minutes up the road has a great supermarket, “Mercadona, the famous Anis museum, a chocolate factory and a Flamenco bar.
Antequera: boasts a number of supermarkets, large shopping area with boutiques, numerous bars and restaurants, plus La Vironique shopping mall with Eroski hypermarket, food hall and cinema. In the town there is a bull ring with restaurant. These aren't the only attractions -there is an old alcazaba at the top of the town, El Torre del Homenaje, with terrific views.
Markets:- there are weekly markets in most of the towns and villages.
Good selection of local restaurants and bars in the surrounding area a number on the A33 maximum of 20 minutes drive, all have menu in English if required:- El Charcon (resembles a castle), Bar Rossi, Hotel Caserio de Iznajar by the lake, La Paloma, Le Maison (by station Salinas) with the up market option Barclo La Bobadilla Hotel.
There is no light pollution at Cortijo Las Olivas offering views of the night sky like you've never seen before! The Milky Way has to be seen to be believed on a warm Andalucian night.

"Rural Spain at it's very best"
I visited in 2012 with my husband and a group of friends and we had an absolutely incredible time! WE LOVE Cortijo Las Olivas!! First of all Jess is an amazing host.. He left us to get on with our holiday but if ever we needed anything they were always available with some really great local knowledge! and the welcome pack was a lovely touch! The accomodation itself if beautifully decorated, cosy and very clean! we had the casita which overlooks the pool, and we used to love waking up in the morning to the sound of birds and the bright spanish sunshine! our friends took the Finca and Hacienda and had equally good reviews of their accommodation. Every apartment had flatscreen television which kept the kids entertained while we were having our siesta, not to mention the table tennis!!
The Pool is very large and is fed by a fresh water well!! meaning that you are swimming in crisp, clean mountain water!! i loved that idea, and the Courtyards are stunning... the place is in very good condition and you can tell that the owners treat it with all the special care of their hearts!
The local area is fantastic and there is lots to do! we took a trip to the Alhambra and Generalife which is well worth a visit!! especially if you are a keen photographer like myself! the Alhambra is only a 50 minute drive away and its straight motorway the whole way! closer to home is the sleepy white mountain top village of Iznajar which is surrounded by beautiful aquamarine lakes!!! the actual town is stunning!! white buildings with all the charm of the REAL Spain with beautifully tended gardens and a quaint little church with one hell of a view!! Also accessible from the cortijo is Malaga, Cordoba, Rhonda, Seville. I think that if you are looking for an exploration or relaxing holiday then Cortijo Las Olivas is a place to go! In fact i want to go back now!
Thank you Jess for a wonderful time!
