Cortijo Las Arizas
About the home
We first visited Iznajar in the spring of 2004, fell instantly in love with the area and, in a complete fit of madness, bought Cortija Las Arizas within 48 hours of our arrival. The countryside around Iznajar casts a strange and compelling spell on you and we have not regretted a single moment, even during the long months of building works. The result is a 6 bed roomed, whitewashed Cortija, partly renovated, but mostly re-built, perched high above the olive groves with stunning views over Lake Iznajar on one side and the mountains of La Subbetica National Park on the other. The Cortija is a haven of tranquillity - perfect for those seeking some peace and quiet after hectic lives at home, yet close to a whole range of cultural, sporting and adventure activities.
One of the huge attractions is the ease of access. The Cortija is just under an hour’s drive from Malaga airport. Flights to Malaga are cheap and plentiful, not only from London, but also most UK regional airports and elsewhere in Europe. Car Hire options are plentiful, with probably the lowest prices in Europe, and the roads, once you leave the coast, are almost deserted.
We have furnished the Cortija with traditional Spanish floor tiles, rugs, wooden beams, incredibly comfortable beds, Moroccan lamps and masses of sofas. There are hammocks in the garden, 4 different levels of seating areas on the house’s upper terraces and both loungers and padded, shaded “siesta alcoves” up by the infinity pool. If you come in the summer, there are fans to supplement the natural breeze from the lake and the mountains. If it's cooler at night, there are open fires and a wood burning stove.
Cortija las Arizas is truly our second home. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Further details indoors:
The front door of the Cortija leads to a large entrance hall with 5 bedrooms plus 4 bathrooms on the ground floor. There is also a utility room with a washing machine and sink. 4 of the bedrooms have doors out to a long, lower terrace. 3 of the bedrooms have double beds with their own bathroom (2 with shower, 1 with bath). The other 2 bedrooms have twin beds with a shared, separate, shower room.
The 6th, separate double bedroom and bathroom (both shower and bath) are reached either by a set of steps from the courtyard by the main entrance, or a door from one of the Cortija's four upper terraces.
The first floor has a separate dining room and modern kitchen with doors out to two of the upper terraces. The large 4m x 7.5m sitting room has doors out to a wooden balcony at one end (perfect for the morning sun) and the largest of the upper terraces at the other end.
Further details outdoors:
The Cortija's four upper terraces are arranged on different levels, the largest of which is 4m x 11m, half of which is covered to give shade whilst eating etc. All of the terraces offer stunning views over the surrounding countryside and spectacular sunsets. The very top terrace is lined with padded Moroccan seating. From all the levels, you really do feel “on top of the world”.
A Mediterranean garden surrounds the Cortija and includes rosemary, lavender, agaves, verbenas, roses, jasmin, bougainvillea, plumbago, erigeron, felicias, zinnias and dama del noche (the pungent scent of which only comes out at night). There are also vines growing over a pergola, under which a hammock has been hung, plus orange, lemon, pomegranate and mandarin trees.
Steps lead up from the courtyard to an infinity pool overlooking the lake and surrounded on 3 sides by a wall. There are lights up the side of the steps and both in the pool and surrounding it.
The 10m x 5m Infinity pool has separate upper and lower terraces with loungers, parasols, poolside shelter, two cushioned alcoves and a WC.

The Andalucia / Cordoba Province region
The Cortija is situated in one of the loveliest and most interesting parts of Spain
"Andalusia is the home of flamenco and tapas, of sherry and bullfights, of gypsies and the Spanish guitar. This is the Spain of castanets and flounced skirts, of white villages and long siestas, of Moorish palaces and bodegas like castles. It is the Spain of Lorca and Picasso, of Carmen and Don Juan. Andalusia is the Spanish south, the full-blooded, unadulterated Spanish thing.
Even before the transformation of so much of its coast into a sort of Spanish Blackpool, the heart and soul of Andalusia lay inland. Climb through the Sierra Nevada to the rolling interior, where the landscape begins to unfold long, languorous limbs. It is ravishing country, with villages crowning the ridges and olive trees stretching to the horizons"

Three great Moorish cities are all within 1-2 hours drive.
Granada is a labaerynth of narrow lanes, alleyways and steep steps. The Alhambra, Granada's most famous attraction, is an Arabian Nights fantasy. Tile mosaics, carved woodwork and ornate sculpted stucco run riot over every surface. You'll need to book early, especially in the summer - on line www.alhambratickets.com
Cordoba was the capital of Muslim Spain. At the heart of the old city is one of the world's most astonishing buildings - the Mezquita, the Great Mosque of Cordoba. A vast forest of elegant columns support row after row of double arches in contrasting bands of red brick and white stone.
Seville is a party town, at its best during the great festivals of Santa Semana or La Feria de Abril. The gothic Cathedral and Alcazar Palace will seduce you away from the tapas bars, for which Seville is also famed.
Numerous other whitewashed villages or small towns are all nearby including: Iznajar, with its 8th century fortress, built against a steep rock wall and surrounded by the lake. Antequera, a market town with an antique bullring and prehistoric caves and Priego de Cordoba, best known for its 18th century baroque architecture, restaurants and tiny alleyways.
The Iznajar / La Celada area
Festivals - Easter is the great fesival period. Iznajar now also boasts a flower festival in early May. There are also many local fiestas throughout the year.
Cycling, Mountain biking and Scooter hire. Bicycles and Scooters can be hired locally. The surrounding countryside is ideal for a gentle potter (The Via Verde or Green Route of the La Subetcia National Park follows the old railway line) or more aggressive trips on some undulating small roads and tracks.
Horse and Donkey riding. There are several stables and riding schools in the area offering trips by the hour or the day.
Golf. The nearest golf course is about 30 minutes away in Antequera. Drive slightly longer to the Costa de Sol and you have your choice of dozens.
Skiing. The Sierra Nevada ski resort, 1.5 hours away, is the most southern in Europe and remains open until the first weekend of May.
Walking. The nearby National Parks of La Subbetica and El Torcal offer a vast range of trails amidst the most stunning countryside.
Beaches and Water Sports. The freshwater Lake Iznajar has a beach, where boats can now be hired, whilst the beaches, Aqua parks and bright lights of the Costa de Sol are just an hour away. There are at least two other Lakes within just over an hours drive offering water sports.
Extreme Sports. Canyoning, Mountain Climbing, Paragliding and Ski Mountaineering can all be practised nearby with the assistance of experienced guides.
Fishing This can be undertaken on Lake Iznajar itself or on one of the numerous mountain streams nearby.
Massage etc. There are local, english speaking, qualified masseurs offering a range of massage, beauty and relaxation treatments.
